  2. Political issues/ Political leaders • JFK won the election by a tiny majority over Nixon, because JFK was perceived as strong on fighting communism, and, that he had good sense. He won.

  3. Economy • Michael Harrington published The Other America in 1962. Thoroughly researched, the book chronicled the plight of “the unskilled workers, the migrant farm workers, the aged, the minorities, and all of the others who live in the economic underworld of American life.”

Culture FACTS about this decade.  • Population 177,830,000 • Unemployment 3,852,000 • National Debt 286.3 Billion • Average Salary $4,743 • Teacher's Salary $5,174 • Minimum Wage $1.00 • Life Expectancy:  Males 66.6 years, Females 73.1 years • Auto deaths 21.3 per 100,000 • An estimated 850,000 "war baby" freshmen enter college; emergency living quarters are set up in dorm lounges, hotels and trailer camps

  5. Fashion & Facts • 1960’s fashion was all about hippie look. Fringe vests, leather boots, mini skirts and peace signs and head bands. They were very groovy back then.

Slang Words • A Gas- A lot of fun. • All show no go- Referenced to a car that had all the pretty chrome goodies, but wouldn't get out of its own way. • Ankle Biter- A baby or small child. • Ape- Used with "Go", "Gone" or "Went". To explode or go completely irate. • Ball-To party, as in Little Richards "Good Golly Miss Molly, Sho Like To Ball". Later, it meant having intercourse
