  3. Does my child need to sit the minimum standards tests? • If a student achieved Band 8 in Reading, Writing and Numeracy NAPLAN in 2017, they DO NOT have to sit the tests. • If a student did not achieve a BAND 8 in ALL THREE areas, they DO need to sit the relevant test. • If a student does not intend to go to Year 12 it is not necessary to sit the tests. • This testing is for the minimum standard to receive a Higher School Certificate, BUT IT DOES NOT stop them from gaining an ATAR.

  4. What will the tests look like? The minimum standard online tests are different to NAPLAN tests. The tests will include:  Reading test: 45 multiple choice questions (maximum of 45 minutes)  Numeracy test: 45 multiple choice questions (maximum of 45 minutes)  Writing test: a 500 word response to one question based on a choice of two options (image or text) (maximum of 45 minutes).

  5. The tests use a computer adaptive test (CAT) model, so each test is tailored to the individual student’s ability and responses to previous questions. No two students will receive the same questions. This improves a student’s experience by more closely matching questions to their ability.

  6. Practice tests The practice tests will include:  Reading test: 15 computer adaptive multiple choice questions (maximum of 15 minutes)  Numeracy test: 15 computer adaptive multiple choice questions (maximum of 15 minutes)  Writing test: a 500 word response to one question based on a choice of two options (image or text) (maximum of 45 minutes). Students are encouraged to try the short online practice tests. The practice reading and numeracy tests will provide schools and students with an indication of the level at the end of the test. There will be no result for the writing test.

  7. When can students take the minimum standard tests? In 2018 the HSC minimum standard tests will be available on the following dates: • Term 1: 19 February to 23 March • Term 2: 21 May to 22 June • Term 3: 13 August to 14 September • Term 4: 5 November to 7 December Students have three years – Years 10, 11 and 12 – to complete the tests to demonstrate that they have met the HSC minimum standard. Practice questions are available at: https://hscliteracynumeracy.nesa.nsw.edu.au/

  8. Elderslie High School Test Dates Term 3, 2018 • Practice: Wednesday 8 August • Formal Testing: Wednesday 29 August Term 4 2018 • Practice: Wednesday 17 October • Formal Testing: Wednesday 14 November

  9. How many times can a student sit the tests? NESA allows students to attempt the tests twice in a calendar year. Who can be entered in the tests? In 2018, any Year 10 student can be entered into the tests.

  10. What about school leavers? The new HSC minimum standard literacy and numeracy tests will replace the Online Literacy and Numeracy tests from 2018. School leavers are able to take the HSC minimum standard literacy and numeracy tests. School leavers can elect to do one, two or all three of the HSC minimum standard literacy and numeracy tests.
