National Center for Research Resources Division of Research InfrastructureInstitutional Development Award (IDeA) Program • IDeA Program was established by authorization of the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993. Congressional intent was to enhance geographical distribution of research funds. • Comparable to NSF’s Experimental Program to • Stimulate Competitiveness in Research (EPSCoR), • established in 1980, and to other EPSCoR-like programs across several Federal agencies (including USDA, NASA, DOE, DOC, DOD, and EPA). • Two programs: • Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) • IDeA Network for Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE)

  2. IDeA Program: COBRE and INBRE All states with a less than 20%success rate for obtaining NIH grant awards over the period of 1999-2003; and states with higher success rates, but less than $100 million average NIH funding over those five years. Thomas Maciag Award The Maciag Award is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Thomas Maciag (1946-2004), an internationally recognized cell and vascular biologist, who was one of the first COBRE Principal Investigators. Dr. Maciag was an innovative scientist, artist, outstanding mentor to young investigators, and an extraordinary educator of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. The intent of this award is to recognize IDeA scientists who exemplify Dr. Maciag’s ideals of research excellence and innovation and his commitment to mentoring new scientists.
