Institutional Research Data Resources for Assessment

This workshop, led by Institutional Research staff in August 2006, focused on methodologies for assessing student learning outcomes and program efficacy using national surveys like SSI and NSSE. Attendees discussed general and program-specific skills, employer feedback, and academic experiences. Key topics included alumni surveys, data acquisition for evaluations, and resources for faculty.   3. The Surveys SSI & NSSE are national instruments (provide comparative statistics).

Student Learning Outcomes:General Skills & Knowledge • Preparation received in quantitative/math, writing, speaking before an audience • Alumni Survey – opinions of alumni • EFS – opinions of their employers • Acquisition of a broad general education, job or work-related knowledge/skills, writing clearly and effectively • NSSE – opinions of first-year & senior students

  5. Student Learning Outcomes:Program-specific Skills & Knowledge • Preparation received in use of electronic navigation and flight control systems, instrument flight skill… • Alumni Survey – opinions of alumni • EFS – opinions of their employers • YOU provide IR with these items

Student Learning Outcomes:Supplemental data to help evaluate the results • Amount of assignments, papers, homework, readings assigned • Frequency of in-class presentations, asking questions in class, working with other students on projects • Coursework emphasis on memorization, analysis, synthesis, making judgments, applying theory to practical problems • NSSE – opinions of first-year & senior students
