Independents (band and labels) • In music, independent music is often shortened to “Indie music” which is a term that is used to summarise independence of bands, commercial radio labels and their subsidiaries. They tend to use the ‘do-it-yourself’ approach to their careers. • Independent labels have a long history of promoting in popular music such as Sun Records, King Records, Stax, Herald, Ember Records, Atlantic Records etc. in the US. • In the UK the Indie chart was compiled in 1970’s into the 1980’s with independent labels such as Rough Trade, Cherry Red, Factory, Glass and Creation.

  4. conglomerates • A media conglomerate is a media group or media institution that own a large list of companies that vary in different mass media industry's. These are mass media such as: • Television • Radio • Publishing • Movies • Internet

  5. Sony corporation of America • Sony Corporation of America is a company that is based in New York in the United States. This company is a leading manufacturer of audio, video, communications and technology products for a range of professional markets. Their top three subsidiaries are: • Sony Entertainment Inc. • Sony Music Entertainment Inc. • Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC.

  6. vice • The Vice company in New York City is based on a Canadian magazine and Media Conglomerate. • It’s main focus is on the Vice monthly magazine that is available in 28 countries such as Italy, Belgium, Brazil etc. Vice Recordings have also released albums and singles with artists such as: • Bloc Party • Snoop Lion • The Streets • The Raveonettes

  7. mtv • MTV was originally a Music Television company launched August 1, 1981. • The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by airhosts known as VJ’s. The first music videos aired on MTV are: • Video Killed the Radio Star – The Buggles • You Better Run – Pat Benatar • She Won’t Dance with Me – Rob Stewart

  8. Famous music video directors Spike Jonze • Mainly known for his revelation with Beastie Boys – “Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win”. Marc Klasfeld • Famous for his headline-grabbing contribution to the music video of Katy Perry’s – “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F). Jake Nava • Known widely for his excellent work with Kanye West’s – “Monster” and Adele’s – “Someone Like You”.

  9. Award ceremonies • The main award ceremony is a Grammy Award. This is where United States to recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry. The main categories for a Grammy Award are: • Album of the Year • Record of the Year • Song of the Year • Best New Artist

Synergy between products • In the media, synergy is the promotion and sale of a product (and all it’s versions) throughout various subsidiaries of a media conglomerate such as film, soundtrack, video games. • For example Kerrang are a subsidiary of Bauer Media. Kerrang use synergy through their platforms such as Kerrang Radio, Kerrang Magazine, Kerrang TV Channel, Kerrang website etc. to advertise their products in different forms of product.
