  2. Exploring Bats: Webquest Introduction Bats are seen as birds of the night. They are the only mammals naturally capable of true and sustained flight. These fascinating creatures are asking for your help to solve a mystery. RESOURCES INTRODUCTION TASK EVALUATION CONCLUSION PROCESS

  3. Exploring Bats: Webquest Task You and your group are part of a highly sought out research team, specializing in Chiroptera (chi-rop-tera), or bats. There are rumors that bats and bat habitats are disappearing. Your team’s job is to explain the different types of bats, locate known bat habitats, research the importance of bats in the ecosystem, and create a poster that would persuade other people to save the bats. Remember, the bats are counting on you to speak for the bats. RESOURCES INTRODUCTION TASK EVALUATION CONCLUSION PROCESS

  5. Exploring Bats: Webquest Evaluation Each member of your group will be given an individual grade and a group grade. You will be graded individually on your contribution to the final poster. Your group grade will be your group’s individual grades added together. Click here to view the rubric Click here to view the rubric RESOURCES INTRODUCTION TASK EVALUATION CONCLUSION PROCESS

  6. Exploring Bats: Webquest Process Step One: Each member of your team is to pick one of the roles listed below and complete the requirements for that specific role. • Zoologist It is the bat expert’s responsibility to be able to explain the basics of what makes a bat a bat. Then they must research the different types of bats that exist in the world. They should be able to compare and contrast the different types of bats. This is the person who must be able to answer any animal related bats questions. • Conservationist It is the conservationist’s job to figure out why bats are disappearing. This person should also be the person who can identify different areas that bats live in. Questions they should be able to answer are: What do bats look for in a home? Where can you find the most bats? Is there something or someone who is causing bats to lose their homes? Etc. • Ecologist It is the ecologist’s job to research and explain how bats are essential to sustain an ecosystem. Questions they should be able to answer are: How to bats affect the ecosystem? Would any other animal either increase or decrease if bats became extinct? Etc. • Artist It is the artist’s job to use the information provided by his or her group members and create a poster to advocate for the survival of bats. While others are researching, the artist should begin by cutting out a bat shape from poster board that will be large enough to hold all of the information. They are then responsible for making sure all of the important information collected from the other team members gets put on the board. The bat poster is how you want to get people’s attention and save the bats, therefore make sure it looks eye catching, informational, and professional. 7. Exploring Bats: Webquest Process (Continued) Step Two: Each member will research using the internet or other reference tools, and gather information based on what their role or job requires. For resources that you can use go to the resource page of this webquest. You are welcome to search on your own, but remember to stay on topic and get your job done. Your team members and the bats are counting on your to find the best information possible. Step Three: Once you have completed your research gathering, choice which pieces of information you believe is important to help the bats. Then give the completed information, worded how you want it, to the team member who is the Artist. Step Four: The Artist will then take all of the information and glue it to the bat poster. Other members of the group should help the Artist as his or her assistants. However the Artist has the final say as to how the poster looks, and should not make the rest of the group create the poster. Step Five: The group will present their poster to the class and then answer any questions the class or teacher may have. Therefore your team should have their notes legible as they need to reference them when answering a question. RESOURCES INTRODUCTION TASK EVALUATION CONCLUSION PROCESS

  8. Exploring Bats: Webquest Conclusion Congratulations! Thanks to you the bats now have an answer to their mystery. And now that you have informed others about their plight, people will come together to assist the bats. Even though bats aren’t as cute as kittens or puppies, they are still very crucial to the ecosystem. And without them the world would be a much different place. Thank you for speaking for the bats.
