  1. Can you die from a broken heart? • Yes, you can if you suffer from TakotsuboCardiomyopathy, or Broken-Heart disease.

  2. Name Origin It’s name, “tako-tsubo” is of Japanese origin as it was discovered by doctors in Japan. It’s the name of the fishing pots used for trapping octopus. The left ventricle of a patient with this condition resembles the fishing pot. • It is also known as apical ballooning syndrome due to the noticeable bulging.

  3. Symptoms Cause • It is a result from a sudden temporary weakening of the muscle of the heart, or the myocardium. • This weakening is triggered by the extreme emotional such as • Death of a love one • A serious break up • Constant anxiety, or anything else that causes stress. • The stress causes a release of excessive norepinephrine. • The norepinephrine causes the myocardium to stop working properly. • Chest pain • Dyspnea • Shortness of breath • Electrocardiographic (ECG) changes • They interpret the electrical activity of the heart. • Elevated levels of cardiac biomarkers • They measure the function of the heart.

Diagnosis • It is very difficult to diagnose since it shares many similarities with other syndromes. • About 1.7% - 2.2% of patients that have had TTS appeared to have acute coronary syndrome. • The ECG scans are nearly identical to ones from an acute anterior wall myocardial infarction. • The most notable feature made by TTS is the abnormalities of the pathognomonic wall motionand the ballooning effect.

Treatment • Intra-aortic balloon pump • A mechanical device that aids in increasing coronary blood flow and therefore helps myocardial oxygen delivery. • Fluids • Negative Inotropes • Beta blockers • Class of drug used to block the action of adrenaline and norepinephrine. • Calcium channel blockers • Chemical that disrupts the movement of calcium • This helps alter heart rate and reduces chest pain.
