  1. Respiration & Respiratory system By Harriet White

  2. What is Respiration? Respiration is the chemical process by which compounds release energy. The compounds change into different ones by reactions. There are two types of respiration: - Aerobic, which requires oxygen and releases lots of energy - Anaerobic, which does not require oxygen but releases much less energy per mole of starting material

  3. Diagram of the heart Diagram of the lungs Diagram of the veins

  4. Equations Equation for respiration: C6H12O6+ 6O2    6CO2 + 6H2O Equation for Photosynthesis 6CO2+ 6H2O Light ...........= Chlorophyll C6H12O6 + 6O2

  5. How it functions? The primary function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen in order for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. The respiratory system does this through breathing. When we breathe, we inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. This exchange of gases is the respiratory system's means of getting oxygen to the blood.

  6. Interesting Facts • We breathe 13 pints of air every minute. • Each lung contains 300-350 million respiratory units called alveoli making it a total of 700 million in both lungs. • More than half a litre of water per day is lost through breathing. • People under 30 years of age take in double the amount of oxygen in comparison to a 80 year old. • Yawning brings more oxygen to the lungs.
