AMRTC Archbishop Michael Ramsey Technology College is running a bilingual project in secondary Geography education. Located in an inner-city environment with a predominantly African and Caribbean student body, our focus is to integrate language learning into the curriculum, despite time constraints. We've initiated various projects and collaborations, boosting student motivation and confidence in using foreign languages. Activities include comparing populations in Haiti, the UK, and France. Our next steps involve strengthening partnerships with schools in France, Nigeria, and Jamaica, and expanding the project to include History and Art.

Running a bilingual project at secondary level CLI Geography at AMRTC
Archbishop Michael Ramsey Technology College • Inner city school in a challenging environment • Most students are of African or Caribbean origins • We are a Technology College and not a Language College
Our department • Not a lot of time in the curriculum • Perception of the students: not the most important subject • A very active department: loads of projects and trips going on • Collaboration project with Science in the past
CLIP for us • To increase the motivation to use and learn a foreign language • To raise the confidence and self-esteem in pupils • To integrate language learning with other part of the curriculum • To promote the use of Target Language
Examples of activities • Comparison of the population in Haiti, the UK and France • Study of the country of origin of the students
Evaluation • Preparing resources can be time consuming • Good communication needed with the Geography department and within our department • Students more enthusiastic about Languages • Context for using Target Language: Staff and students are more confident
What’s next? • Develop or consolidate links with our partner schools in France, Nigeria and Jamaica • Extend the project to other curriculum areas like History or Art
