  2. Post-Secondary Admission Kwantlen Polytechnic University Course selection will be based on date the application was submitted and when the application fee was received. Apply as early as you can. Application Start Date: November 1, 2012 NursingProgram: Apply for November 1-7th for September 2013 intake Apply March 1-7th for January 2014 intake Recommended students apply to both intakes: only 32 seats available per intake British Columbia Institute of Technology Each program has specific requirements. Entrance is competitively based. Look at program of interest and then at entrance or program requirements. Application Start Date: October 1, 2012 Pre-Tests: Students in trades programs should write pre-tests for Math and/or English to access the waitlist more quickly.

  3. Post-Secondary Admission Douglas College Students are accepted with general entry requirements (English 12 C+). Students registered for the University transfer program, course selection will be based on your GPA: Eng 12, Principles of Math 11 or Pre Calculus Math 11 and one academic Grade 12 course Application start date: October 15, 2012 (mid October) Capilano University University Transfer Students are admitted based on their GPA: English 12 and three other academic grade 12 courses. Each Career Program has specific admission requirements. Application Start Date: September 15, 2012

Post-Secondary Admission Simon Fraser University • Application start date: Sept 1, 2012 (Oct 15th on Apply BC) • Students will self report grades in December (term 1) • Early Admission Deadline: February 28, 2013 University of British Columbia • Application start date: September 1, 2012 • Students will self report grades in March 2013 (term 2) • Admission Deadline: January 31, 2013 University of Victoria • Application start date: Sept. 1, 2012 • Students may self report grade Final grade 11 marks when they apply for early acceptance (85-90%) or self report grades (12) in February • Admission Deadline: Feb 28, 2013

Apply BC Application Service of BC • www.applybc.ca • Apply BC, formerly, called PASBC is the online application service to almost every post secondary institution in BC • You can create an account/revisit the site • Once you have applied on line, you will receive instant notification your application has been received by the intended school • Universities no longer accept paper applications • You can apply to multiple post secondary institutions • You will need to select a faculty and a back up faculty in case you do not meet the grade point average for admission • You will need a credit card to pay the application fee • Some post secondary institutions may also request a transcript be sent to them before your term marks are in, if this is the case, follow these instructions

University • When you apply to the Universities, you are applying to a specific Faculty • Faculty of Applied Sciences, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Commerce (Business Administration), etc. • Each Faculty will have its own admission requirements and grade point averages • Transfers between Faculties are allowed • Each course you take is generally worth 3 credits • A normal course load is 15 credits per term/semester which is 5 courses, 30 credits generally from Sept-April 30th • At the end of 4 years or 120 credits (approx 40 courses), you graduate with an undergraduate degree from your Faculty ie. Bachelor of Arts Degree, major in History • You can continue on and complete a Postgraduate degree

University If you have made corrections to your course schedule, you may want to come in to review your courses to ensure you still have the right courses to get into your post secondary institution • SFU • Offers 3 semesters per year • Fall – September to December • Spring – January to April • Summer – May to August • UBC • Offers 2 semesters divided into 4 terms • Winter term1 – Sept to Dec • Winter term 2- January to April • Summer term 1– May –July • Summer term 2 -- July-August

  9. Broad Based Admission Based on academic performance and extra curricular involvement. This category is intended for students within 5% of the official admission consideration and have other attributes that demonstrate an ability to succeed in university UBC • Most faculty’s now require an additional broad based/personal profile application. A student’s experiences inside and outside of the classroom will be reviewed SFU • Diverse Qualifications • Arts and Social Sciences, Computing Science • Business (min 80% gpa required) UVIC • Expanded Qualifications (like a personal profile can be accepted if your average is at the minimum accepting percentage, this applies to: Engineering, Humanities, Social Sciences

College • Offers Certificates, Diplomas and some Degrees • Associate Degrees in Arts & Science • Associate Degrees fulfill the first 2 years of an undergraduate degree • Transfer to a University in your 3rd year • Offers a variety of Career Programs and Apprenticeship Training • Dental Hygienist, Veterinary Technician, Hairdresser, Legal Secretary, Drafting, Accounting, Culinary Arts, Medical Laboratory Assistant, Pharmacy Technician, Automotive Service Technician, Carpentry, Masonry and many more

College • Certificate • Generally takes 3 months to 1 year to complete depending on the program • Diploma • Generally takes 2 years to complete full time • University Transfer program • Can transfer to a University after completing 24 credits/8 courses • Minimum grade point average must be maintained and is determined by the Faculty you are transferring to

Short term training • Warehouse and Logistics Training: Starting with Forklift Certificate, Whimis, First Aid and begin working in a warehouse, shipping and receiving, inventory • ECOMM training for 911, learn how to professionally answer and dispatch emergency vehicles for police or fire, should be 18 to begin program • Vet Assistance Training, assist in veterinary clinics with pets, operations, basic care and reception duties • Help Desk for computer program support: begin with a course at BCIT • BC Registered Physcial Fitness Instructor Training: train to lead classes at local gyms, rec. centres, etc • Event Planning or fundraising courses

More short term training…. • Medical Office Assistant • Medical Lab Assistant • Dental Assistant • Physio or Occupational therapy Assistant …many of the above occupations are offered through Vancouver Community College • Corrections Worker • Insurance Broker • Legal administrative assistant or paralegal

Foundation Programs for Apprenticeships • http://www.itabc.ca/Page498.aspx • Industry Training Apprenticeship Authority of BC • Foundation Program is Entry Level Trades Training that gives you basic skills and competence to enter a trade (entry level) • It may increase your employability in certain fields: Welding/Plumbing/Electrical

Tuition Costs • College • Approximately $2500 per year for University transfer courses • Career programs costs vary according to the program • 4 year Nursing program at Kwantlen costs approximately $40,000 • University • Approximately $6,000 per year plus books, student fees etc • Living on campus costs vary from province to province: UBC Okanagan is about $7000 for accommodation. Be sure to look into meal plans, as an option.

  16. Self –Reporting Marks The Universities require students to self report grades, an initiative that allows students to report their marks over the Internet. SFU: Students report 1st term marks in December 2012 UBC: Students report 2nd term marks in March 2013 UVIC: Students reporting final grade 11 marks, have until November 30, 2012. Students reporting Grade 12 mark, do so in February2013 All offers of admission will be based on second term marks. The ministry will verify all marks in May

LPILanguage Proficiency Index • The LPI is an examination that provides the Universities/Colleges with a way to determine a student’s competence in summary and essay writing • The essay portion of the exam will determine the student’s eligibility for first year English courses • The LPI is not an “admission requirement” but a requirement to register for first year English courses. Check with the faculty or program, you are interested in. • It costs $108.00 to register & write the exam • Possible sitting April 2013 • Kwantlen and Langara have their own language proficiency exam which is less expensive

LPI • The following English marks are required to be exempt from writing the LPI . • UBC Vancouver – English 12: 75% Final or blended mark, or 80% Term 2 • UBC Okanagan – English 12: 75% Term 2 or Final blended mark • SFU – English 12: 75% Final blended mark • UVic – English 12: 86% Final blended mark, recommends all students write the LPI • Kwantlen Polytechnic University- English 12: “B” average Final or blended mark • Capilano University – English 12: “A” average Final blended mark

  19. Provincial Exams English 12 is the only mandatory Provincial Exam you need to write Optional Provincial Exams are no longer offered

Math Overview • UBC Vancouver • Pre Calculus 11 required for all Faculty’s • Foundations of Math 12 will be accepted in lieu of Pre Calculus 11 • Passing Grade required • Pre Calculus 12 required for all Faculty’s except Faculty of Arts, Dental Hygiene, Music • UBC Okanagan • Does not require Pre Calculus 11 for the Faculty of Arts – will accept any Math 11

Math Overview • SFU • Pre Calculus 11 or Foundation of Math 11 required for all Faculty’s • Must obtain grade of 70%; A grade of 60-69% will require you to take an additional math course; below 60% will be denied admission (applies to Math 11 & 12) • Pre Calculus 12 required for all Faculty’s except for Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, Communication, Contemporary Arts, Education • UVic • Faculty of Social Sciences and Faculty of Humanities will now accept Pre Calculus 11 or Foundation of Math 11 • All other Faculty’s require Pre Calculus 11 • Passing Grade required • Pre Calculus 12 required for all Faculty’s except for Faculty of Human & Social Development (Child & Youth Care), Humanities, Social Sciences • Students strongly advised to take Pre Calculus 12 if you are planning on studying Economics, Geography, Psychology within the Social Sciences Faculty

Math Overview • Options available with Math 11 Essentials • UBC Okanagan, Faculty of Arts only • SFU & UVIC will accept Foundations of Math 11 for the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences • Kwantlen Polytechnic University – Associate of Arts & various Career Programs (1-2 year Certificate & diploma programs) • Langara, Douglas, Vancouver Community College and Capilano University – can register for any University level courses that does not have Pre Calculus 11 as a pre-requisite & various Career Programs • After completing 24 credits (8 courses) of Post Secondary Studies, you can transfer to a University (Faculty of Arts) without having to complete Pre Calculus 11

  23. Second Language* • UBC • Requires a language 11 for all Faculty’s • UBC Okanagan does not require a language 11 • UVic • Faculty of Humanities is the only Faculty that requires a language 11 • SFU • Will accept a beginners language 11 for all Faculty’s Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Douglas College, Langara College and Capilano University have no second language requirements *Note that there are some exceptions, to the Language requirement, if you have a learning disability.
