  1. Terrestrial Biomes Ms. Alvita Milner 7th Grade Life Science

  2. STANDARD • S7L4. Students will examine the dependence of organisms on one another and their environments. • c. Recognize that changes in environmental conditions can affect the survival of both individuals and entire species. • e. Describe the characteristics of Earth’s major terrestrial biomes (i.e. tropical rain forest, savannah, temperate, desert, taiga, tundra, and mountain) and aquatic communities (i.e. freshwater, estuaries, and marine).

  3. ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS • How is an animal adapted to best live in the temperate deciduous forest biome? • How can environmental indicators help us interpret results in nature? • How do behaviors impact the environment? What are basic needs common to all living things? • What are the basic functions of living things? • How are structures of organisms related to their function? • How are life cycles among all living things the same or different? • How are traits passed from generation to generation? What happens to energy as it transfers from one organism to the next? • What happens to the food web in a community when one species is eliminated?

  4. TROPICAL RAINFOREST • Describe what you see in the pictures. How much do you think it rains here? What do you think the temperature is like?

  5. SAVANNA • Describe what you see in the pictures. What part of the world would you find this biome? What kind of animals would you find here?

  6. DESERT • Describe what you see in the pictures. Do you think a polar bear could survive here? Why or why not?

  7. TAIGA • Describe what you see in the pictures. What do you think the temperature is there?

  8. TEMPERATE • Describe what you see in the picture. What kind of animals do you think live here?

  9. MOUNTAIN • Describe what you see in the pictures. Would a zebra live here? Why or why not?

  10. TUNDRA • Describe what you see in the pictures. If you were to live here, what would you wear? Why?

  11. TODAY’S ASSIGNMENT • Get into groups of 5. • Each group will be assigned a biome. • Research weather conditions of biome. • Research characteristics of animals who live in that specific biome. • Explain why they must have those characteristics in order to survive. • Create a food web for the biome. • Use http://kids.britannica.com/ or http://www.kidzsearch.com/ • Present information to class using poster board and markers.

  12. WHAT DID YOU LEARN?
