  1. The 2009 Southside Lectureship Sounds like a “big deal” right? It should sound that way because it is- and that’s part of what we’ll look at this morning. BTW, why is it a “lectureship” instead of a “gospel meeting”? Lectureships typically have several different speakers, while gospel meetings just have one speaker- that’s all. And we have some really good Northeast Texas speakers coming this week to preach to and for us. I want to spend a few minutes this morning perhaps giving us some perspective on this week’s efforts.

  2. 2009 Southside Lectureship: Keys to a Successful Week • Realize the Purposesof having one. • It is not just to “have one” because we do every year, nor is to make money- no collections will be taken. • It is to provide opportunities other than “regular” church times for others to hear the gospel, Acts 17:17. • It is to provide opportunities for the “un-churched” to hear the gospel, Acts 17:18. • It is to provide opportunities for “us” to grow through additional and excelling preaching, Acts 2:46a; 5:42. • It is to evangelize- to save souls, Rom.10:14-15 • It is to edify- increased faith only comes from increased knowledge, Rom.10:17. We don’t get spiritually strong and mature by just getting older physically!

  3. 2009 Southside Lectureship: Keys to a Successful Week • Planfor Success by: • Taking full advantage of the opportunities given for yourself and your family- there is nothing you or they could be doing that would be better for spiritual well-being than attending every service. Acts 10:4-5, 23b-33 • Helping others make it to heaven by giving them the best gift anyone can receive: the opportunity to hear and believe the gospel of Jesus Christ! Matt.16:26 If we miss heaven, there are no second chances! • Talk to your children about what we’re doing and how important it is. They will take their cues from you. If the kingdom of God is what you seek first and foremost, they will know it- the inverse is also true. Matt.6:33

  4. 2009 Southside Lectureship: Keys to a Successful Week • Pray(privately and publically) for Success by: • Entreating God’s blessings on our speakers. Not just their “happy recollection of what he has studied and prepared” (what is a “happy recollection” anyway???), but their strength of mind, body, and spirit, their wisdom in and understanding of the Word, their ability to make it clear and plain to us, and for their courage and boldness to ‘preach the Word’ at all times! 2Thess.3:1-2; Eph.6:19 • Beseeching God on behalf of our visitors- that those invited may have their hearts opened to come and hear, that their minds and hearts be given understanding of the Word, and the tenderness necessary to answer its call through obedience, Eph.1:15-19a; 3:14-19. • Humbly petitioning the Father for yourself- that you might have the noble-mindedness of the Bereans, Acts 17:10-11.

  5. 2009 Southside Lectureship: Keys to a Successful Week • Projecta clear image of a “Successful Lectureship” to yourself and one another. • That is perhaps a complicated way of expressing an uncomplicated idea. We have to understand what a “Successful Lectureship” really is. Is it big crowds, multiple baptisms and/or restorations, entertaining speakers and sermons? • Whether in a “regular” church service, gospel meeting, lectureship, or you and a friend sitting across from one another at the kitchen table, “success” is always the same: the good Seed of the pure Word of God meeting good soil of honest and good hearts, Luke 8:15! That’s “success”- period! 1Cor.1:17-21.

  6. 2009 Southside Lectureship Let’s have a great week by: • Realizing the Purpose of our efforts- providing opportunities. • Planning for success for by taking full advantage of our opportunities to attend every service, invitingand encouraging as many as possible to come, and explaining to our children the importance of what we’re doing. • Praying privately and publically for our speakers, visitors, and ourselves. • Projectinga clear image of a “Successful Lectureship” to yourself and one another- good seed meeting good soil!
