  3. Matthew Perry • July 1853: armed U.S. ships commanded by Matthew Perry delivered lettered from Millard Fillmore (President) • Demanded Japan open ports • 1854: 2 Ports opened

  4. Meiji Restoration (1868-1912) • 1867: Overthrew the shogun and restored emperor Mutsuhito • Leaders went to Europe to study governments, economies, technology and customs

  5. Reforms Government Industrialization • Strong central government • Adapted German model • 1889Constitution • Emperor still had absolute rule • Legislature • Economy=priority • Modern banking, railroads, ports, telegraph and postal system

  6. Reforms Society Success • Schools and a university set up • End to class distinctions • Modernization happened with great speed and success

  7. Military Strength • Empire building to fuel industry • Korea • 1876: Force used to open ports to Japanese trade • China • First Sino-Japanese War • Japanese victory • Gained trading in China and control of Taiwan
