  1. Kampong LorongBuangkok: Purpose is to find out how aware the students are of the area and if they would like for the kampong to be conserved 1: Have you heard of Kampong LorongBuangkok (KLB)? Evidence: 23.5% of the 85 respondents replied that they didn’t and they formed the minority among the students that were surveyed. Inference: This shows that KLB is a relatively unknown place to youths. The information on this area has not been effectively disseminated to them.

  2. 2: How did you hear about KLB? Of the 20 who knew what KLB was, the breakdown was as follows: Inference: This shows that most people hear about KLB by word of mouth/ not very publicized. If it is, there would be more respondents aware of this kampong

  3. 3: Have you visited KLB? Evidence: Only 2 respondents visited KLB out of several who knew about it. Inference:This shows that KLB has not been publicized to be a very viable sight-seeing spot or a tourist spot with a lot of things to do there. 4: What is your impression of KLB? What do you think can be done to improve KLB? The general consensus was that the place was very slow paced as well as rural and unique. If given the right resources, this kampong can indeed turn into a unique attraction for both Singaporeans and Foreigners as people are guaranteed to be interested in what it has to offer. Some suggestions did state that more publicity and hype were necessary in publicizing the area.

  4. 5: Do you think that KLB should be conserved? Evidence: 93% of respondents agreed that KLB should be conserved given the fact that otherwise the government would demolish it for other purposes. Inference:This shows the strong support from people behind this conservation movement. 6: Why do you think it should be conserved? - It is important for cultural heritage and identity (younger generations need to be aware of this) - It’s the last Kampong in Singapore so we should not destroy it - It should be kept for original heritage tourism in Singapore (very little currently) - It is not nice to destroy the homes of the residents (as they will be annoyed) -Singapore is a globalised country and city so there is no need for kampongs that show an opposing image/ not very hygienic/we need to move on and not dwell on past living standards

  5. 7: Do you think having exhibitions and homestays are good conservation plans for this area? Most of the respondents believed that it was a good method of conserving the area • Why? • Homestayexperience sounded fun • In order toImproveculture and relations • It will give others an idea of what it’s like to live in a Kampong. • Why not? • -It depends on how people accept this new idea • -The lives of the residents there may be affected by the homestay • -Any form of opening up the kampong to the public will dilute the kampong feelings • -people might not want to stay in a kampong (comfort reasons)

  6. Short Poll on Kampong Life:14 people under 20 years of age were polled General demographics: -A fair representation of the population was obtained from the different types of homes -Mean number from 1 to 10 that was given for how well relations with their neighbors were was 5.5 -Respondents only greeted their neighbors and sometimes had lengthy conversations and they would rely on their neighbors mainly for security purposes -Interactions with neighbours were a 4 out of 5 in terms of how friendly they were

  7. Hopes and aspirations for neighborly relations: • -Main reason as to why respondents had negative relations with their neighbours would be due to the lack of time to create them. • Solutions that can be taken: • More friendship that goes beyond casual conversations and not just based on superficial topics • Host parties and cook dinner together

  8. Do you leave your windows and doors open?(habit)43% said no and their reasons revolved around the idea of security, safety, rain and air temperature. 57% said yes and it was mainly due to ventilation purposes and not due to the fact that they trusted their neighbours Is there any “Kampong Spirit” amongst your neighbours? -78.6% of respondents wanted a kampong spirit in their homes showing that this kampong spirit in KLB is much desired by normal Singaporeans
