  1. Chapter#17 Information and Communication Technology

  2. SLO#17.1.1 • Describe the information technology (IT) and the components of information technology • (hardware , software , data , procedure and people) Information technology (IT) is the application of computers and  telecommunications equipment to store, transmit and manipulate data.

  3. Information technology as "the study, design, development, application, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems“. Information and communication technology (ICT) is basically an electronic based system of information transmission, reception, processing and retrieval.

  4. ICT is blend of two fields. • Information Technology: The Scientific method used to store information, to arrange it for proper use and to communicate it to others is called information technology.

  5. 2. Telecommunication: The method that is used to communicate information to Far off places instantly is called telecommunication.

  6. Components of Information Technology • Hardware: Hardware is device that is physically connected to your computer or something that can be physically touched.

  7. Internal hardware examples • Blu-Ray •  CD-ROM •  DVD • CPU • Hard drive • Motherboard • RAM • Sound card • Video card

  8. External hardware examples • Flat-panel • Monitor • LCD • Keyboard • Mouse • Printer • Scanner

  9. 2. Software: Software is a general term for the various kinds of programs used to operate computers and related devices. It means computer instructions or data. OR Anything that can be stored  electronically is called software.

  10. Examples of Software • Antivirus (AVG) • Audio / Music program (iTunes) • Database (Access) • Device drivers • E-mail (Outlook) • Game (World of Warcraft) • Internet browser (Firefox)

  11. Movie player (VLC) • Operating system (Windows XP) • Photo / Graphics program (CorelDRAW) • Presentation (Powerpoint) • Programming language (Perl) • Simulation (Flight simulator) • Spreadsheet (Excel) • Utility (Compression, Disk

  12. Cleanup,Encryption, Registry cleaner, Screensaver) • Word processor (Word)

  13. 3. Data: Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis is called data. OR Data are facts that are used by programs to produce useful information. It may be in the form of text, graphics or figure that can be recoded.

  14. Some special forms of data are distinguished. A computer program is a collection of data, which can be interpreted as instructions. Most computer languages make a distinction between programs and the other data on which programs operate.

  15. 4. Procedure: A set of instructions that performs a specific task. OR Procedure are the set of instructions and rules to design and use information system.

  16. These are written in manuals and documents for use. These rules or methods may change from time to time.

  17. 5.People: Peoples of information and communication technology played a vital role in the modern Era. Every CBIS needs people if it is to be useful, who influence the success or failure of information systems. People design and operate the software, they feed input data, build the hardware for the smooth running of any CBIS.

  18. SLO#17.3.1 • Describe working and use of fax machine, cell phone, photo phone and computer.

  19. Fax Machine: Fax machines are must for many businesses around the world. A fax machine basically scans a page to convert its text and graphic into electronic signals and transmits it to another fax machine through telephone line. The receiving machine converts the signal and uses a printer to create the copy of the message that was sent.

  20. 2. Cell Phone:

  21. Cell phones represent a type of technology that has been around for little over fifty years. However, it has only been recently that many people began to use cell phones as a major part of their everyday life. Cell phones are interesting, useful and play a major role in our lives by bringing people closer together and keeping in constant touch with one another.

  22. A cell phone carries a radio transmitter and a receiver inside it. It sends and receives the message in the form of radio waves. Imagine calling a friend on the other side of town. As you chat away, your phone converts your voice into an electrical signal, which is then transmitted as  radio waves and converted back into sound by your friend’s phone.

  23. A basic mobile phone is therefore little more than a combined radio transmitter and a radio receiver, quite similar to a walkie-talkie.

  24. 3. Photo Phone:

  25. The Photo phone  is a telecommunications device which allowed for the transmission of speech on a beam of light. Modern Photo Phone used as a video phone, speakers can see the pictures of each other. We can communicate with our relatives or friends on photo phone with the physical appearance of each other.
