REQUIREMENTS • Journalism students: one ad, either publication • Quest staff: 8 blocks minimum • North Star staff: 4 ads/year
DUE DATE/POINT VALUE MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2011 OR BEFORE Jrn: 50 points/first MP Quest: 80 points/first MP Newspaper: 40 points/overall appraisal
SALES TARGETS • YEARBOOK: Businesses or senior parents! • NEWSPAPER: Businesses ONLY (no proud parent ads included here) • Note: brainstorm a list of possible buyers!
What to bring? • The publication(s) for examples • Ad contract(s) • Yearbook ad template sheet • Ad manual booklet
Approaching a business (or parent) • Ask for the manager/parent, first! • Introduce yourself, school • Look neat, professional, speak up (be confident, don’t mumble, look ‘em in the eye!) • Explain your goal/give them info (see page four of ad manual for ideas)
Tips & Tricks • Set an appointment with the manager or parent • After the meeting, keep checking back with phone calls • Write your name on the bottom of the ad form (esp. if you leave it)
Avoid. . . • Do not go to the mall, unless you work at a store and know the manager • Don’t bother with national chains (unless you know the franchise owner)

Where can you go? • Area/local businesses • Past advertisers • School vendors • Nail, hair salons, dress/tux shops, limo services, florists • Colleges, recruiters • Local family-owned restaurants
START EARLY! • There will be approximately 250 of you selling advertising over the next two months! • DON’T PROCRASTINATE!! • Report your ad sale so we can keep a running list in the classroom (and others don’t go to the same place/person)!
