  5. Content Standards Framework Content standards represent the overarching goals that describe what students should know and be able to do. Benchmarks are more specific statements of what all students should know and be able to do at a specified time in their schooling. Grade level expectations (GLEs) are specific statements of the knowledge and/or skills that students are expected to demonstrate at each grade level.

  6. GLE Principles GLEs are not curriculum – they are not inclusive of everything covered in a grade. Rather, GLEs define core content to be mastered by the end of a particular grade. Additional content may be included in the local curriculum. Show progression throughout grade levels. Not repetitive .

  7. Grade Clusters K-2 E 3-5 E 6-8 M 9-12 H National standards identify following grade clusters:

  8. Coding Key for GLEs The first number indicates the standards number. The capital letter represents the cluster level. The third symbol is a second number, which represents the benchmark number. The number following the decimal point is the GLE number for the benchmark. The letters for each grade cluster level are below: E represents the elementary cluster level, grades K-5. M represents the middle school cluster level, grades 6-8. H represents the high school cluster level, grades 9-12. Example: Grade 3: 2-E-4.1 would represent the first GLE for benchmark four for standard two in the Elementary Cluster Level (Grade 3).

  9. Grade 3 Standard 2: Students will analyze the influence of family, peers, culture, media, technology and other factors on health behavior. Benchmark 2-E-4: Describe how the school and community can support personal health practices and behaviors. GLE 2-E-4.1: Identify school and community support staff (e.g., school nurse, counselor, social worker, nutritionist).

  10. Alignment Use of a term and/or its definition does not constitute alignment with a GLE unless the only student understanding is to know the definition.

  11. Example Grade 3 GLE 1-E-1.1 Define physical, emotional and social health. Grade 2 GLE 1-E-2.2 Define the concepts of self-image and self-esteem.

  12. Example High School GLE 8-H-2.1 Research the various types of health advocacy organizations (e.g., American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Diabetic Association) and their role.

  13. Example Grade 4 GLE 1-E-1.1 Describe the interrelationship of emotional, social and physical health during childhood.

  14. Instructional Materials should: Serve as a resource to teachers and students. Provide current, accurate and adequate information. Correlate well with the content of the Louisiana Health Education GLEs for that grade or course.
