A book that is based off Vietnam of events that took place during the war and after it and what had happened to the people Attribute: the time and the setting of my book are all real based on true facts. Attribute: Setting makes this book a Narrative Nonfiction “Whether as advisors to the south Vietnamese army or as combat troops directly engaged in fighting the Viet Cong and the north Vietnamese army, U.S. soldiers served in Vietnam from 1959 to 1975, making the war twice as long as the war of independence”(6). “on January 20, 1968, a marine reconnaissance patrol made contact with North Vietnamese Army (NVA) troops”(70). “during the monsoon season of early 1969, the Communists began stock piling huge stores of weapons, ammunition, and supplies”(92). Attribute: Because of the real events and time setting this makes my book a Narrative Nonfiction. “In October 1966, Boatswain’s Mate First Class James E. Williams was leading a two-boat canal patrol into a rung Sat as part of a mission” (44). “General Bo Nguyen Giap, the North Vietnamese defense minister and overall commander in chief of the Communist forces, gave me an insight into this strategy when I met him in Hanoi in 1990” (10). “Called the “Christmas Bombings” by the United States press, B-52 bombers and other planes attacked strategic targets and antiaircraft defenses in Hanoi and in North Vietnam’s major part city, Haiphong< as well as other locations on December, 18 1972” (106). Attribute: This novel is a mystery because the main character must solve the problem, or terrible things will happen. “Ngo Dinh Diem became the first president of democratic south Vietnam in 1955 but through a short time he got assassinated after he got killed a power struggle between the military leader in South Vietnam occurred over the next 2 years, during which 9 governments came and went” (22). “U.S. army soldier Gerry Schooler recalled a painful discovery during the Tet Offensive when he and another soldier were ordered to search for Viet Cong in a row of ruined homes, in one house, “in the very back, under this table, we found these 2 kids, obviously brother and sister, about 5, embraced, no doubt because they were so frightened. EVALUATION: Is 10,00 days of thunder a good example of a narrative nonfiction? • Philip Caputo a prize winning journalist did an outstanding job in his book 10,000 days of thunder. He describes all the real events and the exact dates and people real names in this story. It is like actually being there in the war and what the people are going through. Its crazy to see the stress and terror the men went through they might have been trained to fight but everyone was terrified.
