The Process of Managing Projects • We all undertake projects but we rarely make conscious efforts to manage them • In manufacturing environments, project management focuses on standardization of repetitive production processes • In information-rich environments, project management focuses on flexibly coping with dynamically changing processes and procedures

  2. What is a Project? • Goal-oriented • Coordinated undertaking of inter-related activities • Finite in duration with beginnings and ends • To a degree each one is unique

  3. What is Project Management? • Getting the job done • on time • within budget • according to specifications • This is called the triple constraint

  4. The Project Life Cycle • Project selection - arise out of needs and involve commitments • Planning - preplanning, milestones, revisions • Implementation - doing what’s spelled out in the plan • Control - monitoring and dealing with variances • Evaluation - periodic “stock-taking” by objective observers • Termination - making sure loose ends are handled

  5. Project Management in the Information Age • We have shifted from working with tangible stuff to less tangible information • The character of projects has become quite different
