Cyberbullying By Iliana Booth
Once there was a girl named Kaylee. She was very nice to everyone.
At school, she had many friends because she was so friendly. She always sat next to her best friend Beccaat lunchtime.
One day, Becca stepped in a puddle at recess and slipped. She landed wet in the puddle. She got back up and was O.K.but a girl named Taylor saw her all wet.
Taylor called her clumsy, and at home Taylor opened up her e-mail account and sent a message to Becca.
That day, Kaylee invited Becca to her house. They opened up their own e-mails, and found a hurtful e-mail. Here’s what it read: To: Becca@mailcloud.com From: TaylorM@mailcloud.com Subject: Loser! Becca, you are so clumsy! It was just a little puddle, heh! What a loser!!
Beccas’ jaw dropped. “Why would Taylor say that? It makes me feel terrible.” “It’s okay, Becca,” said Kaylee, “Remember when the teacher said that if anything happens, we should tell her? Well, we could just do that.” We should tell the teacher! I feel terrible.
The next day after school, Kaylee and Becca go to the teacher and tell her about their situation. “Taylor has sent me a mean e-mail!” Becca explains, “What should we do?”“Cyberbullying?” asked the teacher, “The smart thing to do when cyberbullying happens is to stop, block and tell.”
“What is cyberbullying?” asked Kaylee. “Well,” said the teacher, “Cyberbullying is like regular bullying, except it is not physical. Cyberbullying happens on an electronic device of some kind, like a computer. The bully tries to hurt your feelings but can’t see your face.” Cyberbullying is terrible, and the consequences include paying a fine or even going to jail!
“When on the computer, kids are usually meaner then they really are because they can’t see the victims’ reaction,” explained the teacher. “A way you can stop cyberbullying is to stop what you’re doing, block the bully so that they can’t reach you, and then tell a trusted adult. Don’t respond to the bully. What you girls did was the right thing to do!” • Use netiquette (Polite manners on the internet) when on the Internet! Picture the person behind the screen!
“I will handle this situation tomorrow with Taylor. I won’t let this happen again, promise,” said the teacher, “You girls can leave.” “Okay,” said the girls. They left the room, walking together. They would again hang out at Kaylee’s house and do homework.
The next day at school, Kaylee noticed everyone laughing at Becca and whispering when she came in. Had Taylor sent the e-mail to everyone? Only a few kids weren’t laughing, and looked sympathetic. Obviously they knew it was mean to tease, but they didn’t say anything. At recess, Kaylee told Becca that Taylor had sent the e-mail to everyone.
“Of course I’ve already noticed that!” exclaimed Becca. “I can’t believe, though, that everyone would make such a big deal about tripping in a puddle! Plus, they were gossiping about it! The teacher has told us before that gossiping is not nice.” “I know,” Kaylee said glumly, “But the teacher will take care of it.”
After school, the teacher brought Taylor to her desk once everyone had left. “Taylor,” she said, “Do you know what cyberbullying is?” “No,” Taylor told her honestly. “Well,” the teacher went on, “I have heard you have been mean to Becca through e-mail.” “It wasn’t meant to be mean!” Taylor exclaimed, “It was a joke; funny! She slipped in a puddle.” You have been mean throughe-mail…
“It might have seemed funny that you sent it to everyone else, but you have hurt Becca’s feelings” explained the teacher. “Cyberbullying is being mean through an electronic device. Cyberbullying is wrong.” Taylor’s face turned from frustrated to upset. She felt terrible for being mean.
“I’m so sorry,” Taylor suddenly said, “I didn’t know that what I did would cause so much harm.” “What you did was very wrong and was not funny. In the worst cases, cyberbullying can lead to suicide! Luckily, this wasn’t such a big deal. Kaylee and Becca told me what happened. You are forgiven. I can’t let it happen again though. Tomorrow you are to apologize to the class.” “Okay.” Taylor agreed, “It’s what’s right.” She felt like she had just been taught something very important, and she had been.
The next day, Taylor apologized honestly. “I am sorry for sending the e-mail to everyone,” she replied,” It wasn’t funny, and won’t happen again. Becca, I didn’t mean it.” The teacher was satisfied with that, and Taylor returned to her seat. “Let this be a lesson to you all,” said the teacher, “when on an electronic device, remember to always be nice. Kids are meaner than usual when online because they can’t see the victim’s face. You kids can all do the right thing, and make good choices.”
Okay, well, that is the end of Beccaand Kaylee’s story. Taylor learned her lesson, and everyone was happy. Like in the story, if you are ever cyberbullied, tell a trusted adult. Let’s make peace for this world!!!
