  3. Cheated? • Italian political parties felt that they were cheated and not rewarded properly for their role in WWI. • Rise of nationalistic parties w/ Mussolini in the forefront.

  4. Seizure of Fiume • Gabriele D’Annunzio seized Fiume w/ a few patriotic Italians • Italian army forces them out. • Showed how armed militants could be used against the government.

  6. Fascists in control • Controlled police force, and terrorist squads • Assassinated a socialist leader and critic of fascists

  7. Accord with the Vatican • Lateran Accord of 1929 • Recognized the Pope as ruler of the Vatican • Paid money to the Papacy. • Catholicism official religion of Italy • Exempted from taxes

  8. Motherhood in Fascist Italy • Instituted policies of maternal leave, insurance, child-rearing education, subsidies for large families. • Banned abortion and contraception • Women were still in the workforce but had lower skill/ poor paying jobs.
