  1. WIND POWER ASSESSMENT Wind & Energy Efficiency • BJORN WESPESTAD • RYAN WATKINS

  2. Outline • Anemometer loan program overview • Wind mast characteristics and installation • Data analysis • Current sites • Alternative energy saving techniques - Farm Pilot Program - PV assessments

  3. Current Energy Challenges • Challenges and opportunities • Energy Consumption • 25 % energy • 28 % electricity • Economic prosperity and environmental security • Price of natural gas and oil • Increased reliance on imported fossil fuel • Harm to environment • NOX and CO2 emissions • Reliable energy source • Infinite source

  4. NJ ANEMOMETER LOAN PROGRAM • Funded by NJCEP/NJBPU • Facilitate assessment of wind resources for residential, farm and commercial applications • NJ has one of most aggressive incentives for renewable energy in U.S.

  5. NJ ANEMOMETER LOAN PROGRAM GOALS • Increase awareness and understandability of renewable energy potential • Purchase, test, & install 30-meter mast outfitted with anemometers throughout southern NJ • Free wind analysis for 1 year to estimate wind turbine paybacks for customers

  6. Wind Power Capacity In the U.S.

  7. NRG TILT-UP MASTS CHARACTERISTICS • Steel tube with flared sections • Guy lines in four directions maintain stability • No land disturbance • Commercial product • Similar masts are currently being used in Upper Deerfield and Salem, NJ

  8. NRG TILT-UP MAST SPECIFICATIONS Provided by NRG Systems

  9. NRG TILT UP MAST INSTALLATION • Mast is tilted up from ground w/ gin pole and a small winch • Lifting of tower is done with set of guy wires attached to gin pole • Baseplate is hinged: gin pole and tower can pivot to erect mast • Masts are stabilized with guy wires attached to screw – in anchors suitable for many soils

  10. ANCHOR SELECTION • Screw-In Anchors EXISTING SOIL TYPE Provided by NRG Systems

  11. Data Logger • Collects data every 5 or 10 min. • Runs on batteries, no electric power required • Rowan students collect data once every two weeks • Data analysis – projected amount of power harnessed • Data updated to website

  12. Current Sites Assessments in South Jersey • Neptune Farm • – Salem, NJ • Eachus Farm • – Upper Deerfield, NJ • Bayshore Discovery Project • – Port Norris, NJ

  13. Wind Mast at Neptune Farm

  14. Eachus Tower Data

  15. Clean Energy/Energy Efficiency– Farm Pilot Program • Free energy audits for small commercial buildings, educational administrative buildings, and rural farms • Analysis of heating and cooling equipment, lighting, and power consuming appliances • Detailed report delivering recommended efficiency investments and appropriate clean energy onsite generation investments.

  16. PV Assessments – Rowan University • E-mail contact Dr. Peter Jansson - jansson@rowan.edu • Attempting to become a leader in photovoltaic • design and implementation throughout • South Jersey • Working in conjunction with MESA in assessing • homes & farms across New Jersey for PV potential

  17. CONCLUSION • Free 1 year wind analysis • No long term impacts to site (No land disturbance) • Take advantage of NJ’s renewable energy incentives • Create renewable energy & save money
