  1. ADVENT

  2. Three elements: Wreath, candles, and calendar A way to mark down (count down)

  3. Advent: in Latin it means the coming • Established by the church leaders in 500 AD • The original purpose: reflection on the meaning of Christmas and preparation of the new believer for baptism • Advent was four week set aside to contemplate what the coming of Jesus means to the world and every individual • Time for personal retrospection and growth

  4. Three different meanings for advent: • The coming of the Son in human form as the babe in a manger • The coming of Jesus in lives, hearts, and actions of those who accepted Him as their Savior • The future coming when Jesus will return to earth as the King

  5. The people who celebrated the Advent focused more on the second coming of Christ until World War II • When Christmas becomes a holiday for children Advent was changed to remember the child in the manger • Christmas become more meaningful during the Advent season

  6. Vikings created the Advent wreath to remember that Jesus brought light to earth along with the promise of eternal life • Christians from northern Europe saw the evergreen as the symbol of faith

  7. Candles were added • 4 candles • 3 purple candles represent the most precious gifts: hope, peace, and love • Final candle, most often red ( now pink) symbolizes the joy of new life received through the gift of Christ’s sacrifice on the cross • Some adds large white candle in the midst and it was lit on Christmas eve. It symbolizes Christ’s birth

  8. Each candle represents each week of 4 weeks in Christmas season • Candles were added during the late Middle Ages • Markings on the candle made to represent each day between first Sunday and Christmas eve • In churches one candle was lit each Sunday • First candle represents the prophets who predicted the coming of Jesus • Second candle represented the Bible and its message

  9. Third candle stood for Mary and her mission • Last candle was lit for John the Baptist who told the world that the Savior would be coming • The large candle was lit on Christmas eve and stood for Jesus • The newest addition to Advent was the Advent calendar

  10. Most common • Started in Germany 150 years ago • Christmas: children’s holiday • 200 years ago the wreath was hung with 24 tiny bags filled with treats stringed to wreath • Many preferred the advent calendar • Before the calendar families used chalk to mark on the door until it reached 25 • Majority of people during 1800’s couldn’t read • The concept of an Advent calendar was originated with Gerhand Lang’s mother using 24 pieces of candies with string by the number for each day on the board

  11. When Gerhand became a man he printed and sold 24 tiny pictures that could be glued to a large calendar • In 1908 he produced calendars that had doors or windows that can be opened. In each door or window was a drawing of toy, candy, or Christmas decoration • At the end of WWII Advent calendar spread across Europe and USA • In windows are the Scriptures or nativity scene pictures

  12. Today Advent calendar as one of the most common ways to countdown • Advent is like a movie preview Merry Christmas to all!
