  1. Islam Leigh and Jordan

  2. ORIGINS • Islam began in Saudi Arabia during the 7thcentury

  3. ORIGINS • The religion began with the teachings of Muhammad, the last prophet of Allah. • It is believed that Muhammad had his first revelations from Allah in a cave at Hira in 610 CE. Muhammad was 40 years old when he received his first revelations from Allah and they continued for 22 years. These messages and revelations given to Muhammad make up the Qur’an, Islam’s sacred text. • For 13 years Muhammad preached his message to a small group of disciples and in less than 30 years it rapidly spread across the Arabian Peninsula. Over the following centuries Islam spread as far as India in the east and Spain in the west. Through Arab traders Islam spread to south-east Asia to countries such as Indonesia, today’s largest Muslim country. • Today Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world.

  4. WHAT GOD DO THEY WORSHIP? • Muslims follow and worship a god called Allah. They believe that Allah is the only god and he has no equal. • Muslims believe that: • Allah is the creator of the world and he is the first, the last and the everlasting • He is all-powerful, all-merciful, all-knowing, supreme and sovereign • There is nothing else in the universe worthy of worship besides Allah • Only Allah is capable of granting life • He knows what is in our hearts • Allah is very gracious and kind to his slaves • Allah is near and personal • Allah doesn’t forgive people who worship anything other than him • He has sent his messengers to guide all of mankind and invite them to worship him alone • Allah is with those who fear him and those who do good

  5. BASIC BELIEFS • The core belief of Islam is the belief in one god, Allah, who is all-powerful and who created and controls the world. • Muslims believe that Allah promises that those who obey him will enter Paradise in the afterlife while those who disobey him will be sent to hell. Muslims believe that hell is a place that punishes with pus, boiling water, pus, chains, searing wind and food that chokes and Paradise is a place with wide-eyed damsels, wine and luscious fruits. • There are five practices that every faithful Muslim must observe. These are known as the five pillars and they are the foundation of the faith. The five pillars include: • Profession of faith • Prayer five times daily • Almsgiving • Fasting during Ramadan • Pilgrimage to Mecca

  6. Profession of faith (Shahadah) • “There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah” • Simply reciting this statement in public makes you a Muslim. • Prayer 5 times daily (Salah) • Muslims are required to face Mecca and pray in the early morning, at noon, mid-afternoon, sunset and in the evening. But before each time of prayer they must wash their arms, feet, mouth and nostrils three times. Prayers include recitation of specific verses as well as set prayers of praise and adoration for Allah.

  7. Almsgiving (Zakah) • All adult Muslims must give 2.5 per cent of their wealth to charity each year. • Fasting during Ramadan (Sawm) • Ramadan is a month in the Islamic calendar which occurs each year. This month marks the time when the Qur’an was first revealed to Muhammad. During this month Muslims must refrain from all food and drink between first light in the morning until full dark at night. • Pilgrimage to Mecca (Hajj) • Muslims believe that Mecca, which is located in Saudi Arabia, is the point on planet Earth closest to Paradise. The city of Mecca is the holiest and most sacred site in Islam. Muslims who are healthy and financially capable are required to make the journey to Mecca at least once in their lifetime.

  8. WHERE IS IT PRACTICED? • Currently there are approximately 1.5 billion people in the world who practice Islam. This makes Islam the second largest religion in the world • Many Islam practicing countries can be found in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Some countries that are predominantly Islam countries include Indonesia, Afghanistan, Algeria, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iraq, Libya, Morocco and Pakistan. • It is estimated that there are 340,400 Muslims in Australia
