  36. Articles

  37. An article is a word that combines with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. Articles specify the grammatical definiteness of the noun, in some languages extending to volume or numerical scope. The articles in the English language are the, a, and an. • Articles are usually characterized as either definite or indefinite.

  38. Clasifications • A definite article indicates that its noun is a particular one (or ones) identifiable to the listener. It may be the same thing that the speaker has already mentioned, or it may be something uniquely specified. The definite article in English is the. • a + singular noun beginning with a consonant sound

  39. An indefinite article indicates that its noun is not yet a particular one (or ones) identifiable to the listener. It may be something that the speaker is mentioning for the first time, or its precise identity may be irrelevant or hypothetical, or the speaker may be making a general statement about any such thing. English uses a or an (depending on the initial sound of the next word) as its indefinite article.

  41. A • "My daughter really wants a dog for Christmas." This refers to any dog. We don't know which dog because we haven't found the dog yet. • Somebody call a policeman!" This refers to any policeman. We don't need a specific policeman; we need any policeman who is available.

  42. A • a broken egg • "I need a bottle of water.“ • "I need a new glass of milk.“ • a European country • I am a teacher.

  43. A • a boy • a car • a bike • a zoo

  44. A + singular noun beginning with a consonant sound • a user (you ser) • a university (youniversity) • a unicycle (younicycle)

  45. AN • When I was at the zoo, I saw an elephant!" Here, we're talking about a single, non-specific thing, in this case an elephant. There are probably several elephants at the zoo, but there's only one we're talking about here.

  46. AN • an egg • an apple • an idiot • an orphan

  47. AN • an unusual problem • Brian is an Irishman. • Ver video abajo

  49. THE • "The dog that bit me ran away." • "I was happy to see the policeman who saved my cat!“ • "He spilled the milk all over the floor" (some specific milk, perhaps the milk you bought earlier that day) or "He spilled milk all over the floor" (any milk).
