  1. GRNET activities on Optical Networking Dimitrios Kalogeras

  2. Summary • OTE-WAVE • Test bed evaluating state of the art optical multiplexing equipment

  3. OTE-WAVE A pilot project aiming at: • Facilitate awareness of state of the art optical networking technologies by using the OTE’s DWDM equipment. • Adapt a system for providing integrated management for IP and DWDM networks • Perform interoperability tests • Explore new services through the gigabit test bed.

  4. OTE-WAVE participants • OTE (coordinator) • GRNET (contractor) • National Technical University of Athens (contractor) • University of Athens (contractor)

  5. OTE-WAVE activities • WP1: ProjectManagement • WP2: Network design • WP3: Network implementation and measurements on fiber and DWDM links • WP4: Integrated network management • WP5: Specification and execution of tests in the testbed and evaluation of alternative network architectures. • WP6: Dissemination

  6. OTE’s DWDM Network • A ring of 9 OADMs (Marconi PMA-32) covering approximately 70km. • It is used for providing gigabit services to GRNET (GRNET2)

  7. OTE-WAVE test bed

  8. Integrated Network Management • To adapt and in-field test an Inter-Technology Network Management System (INMS) on top of IP/MPLS and DWDM management systems that is capable of: • Providing integrated end-to-end MPLS Paths over Optical SNCs • Bandwidth guarantees • Alarm Reporting and Correlation • Performance Monitoring and Assurance

  9. Integrated Network Management II • Configuration Management • Enables single point access to integrated provisioning tasks • End-to-end views of connections and their underlying infrastructure • Fault Management • Enables integrated reporting, logging and correlation of alarms to determine the root cause • Fault localization and restoration (layer, managed entity responsible for the fault) • Performance Management • Enables the collection and processing of data from the technology NMSs in order to assess the QoS of the provided connectivity

  10. Measurements on DWDM links • Measurements of 10Gbps DWDM links will be performed in terms of • Attenuation • Polarization Mode Dispersion • Chromatic Dispersion

  11. Measurements on DWDM links II

  12. Experiment with intelligent multiplexing equipment • GRNET participated in the iGRID 2002 conference with the cooperation of Electronic Visualization Lab, University Illinois at Chicago. • Streaming of digitised VR stereo signal to a remote user through gigabit network using EVL Teravision Technology.

  13. Experiment with intelligent multiplexing equipment II • Sorrento Network’s Gigamux equipment • Multiplexes 2 GbE signal into an SDH OC-48
