  2. READ THE FOLLOWING SENTENCES The bank alarm went off. People began to gather. The bank rubbers went. The police arrived.

  3. So, we see that: The police came after the rubbers. Or: When the police arrived, the rubbers had gone.

  4. Also Read these sentences: It was 7:00 o'clock. I did my homework. It was 10:00 o’clock. I went to sleep.

  5. So, I did my homework then I went to sleep. • I had done my homework before I went to sleep. or: • After I had done my homework, I went to sleep.

  6. Read these sentences, too: Now, I feel well. I caught a cold. I took the medicine.

  7. So, I took the medicine. I felt well. Or: I felt well because I had taken the medicine.

  8. Compare the following sentences again: • When the police arrived, the rubbers had gone. • I had done my homework before I went to sleep. • After I had done my homework, I went to sleep. • I felt well because I had taken the medicine.

  9. What do you get? • In all these sentences two works are done in the past, for example: • “The police came”. “The rubbers went”. But one of them is near to this time and the other is further. It means that: • “When the police came, there weren’t any rubbers”.

  10. Therefore we should say: • When the police arrived the rubber had gone. • After the rubber had gone, the police arrived.

  11. Look at the form of verbs in each sentence: • After the rubbers had gone, the police arrived. • Before I went to sleep, I had done my homework. • Because I had taken the medicine, I felt well.

  12. As you see, the verbs which are further have a different form: Had gone Had done Had + past participle (pp) Had taken This tense is called: Past Perfect

  13. We can conclude that: • After + past perfect, …. simple past • Because + past perfect, .. simple past • When + simple past, … past perfect • Before + simple past, .. past perfect When and just when we are talking about past tense in both sentences.

  14. Fill in the blank: • Before I got to the doctor’s office, he ……… there. (to leave) • After they …………the dinner, I got home. (to serve) • The teacher…………my paper when I had finished the test. (to take) • Frank was angry because he…………his money. (to lose)
