  1. McDonald’s vs. Wendy’s:Who Gives You More for your Money By: Brandon Fell and Jamie Weltz

  2. McDonald’s Background • World’s largest chain of fast food restaurants • Started by the two brothers Richard and Maurice as a single hamburger stand in San Bernardino, California • First location was 14th and E Streets in 1948 • Sold the restaurant chain to Ray Kroc for 2.7 million dollars

  3. Wendy’s Background • First Wendy’s old fashioned Hamburger restaurant opened in downtown Columbus Ohio in 1969 • Founded by Dave Tomas and named after his daughter Melinda “Wendy” Thomas (Wendy a nickname given by her brothers and sisters • Dave Thomas worked with the KFC owner Colonel Sanders

  4. Purpose • The purpose of our project is to research which fast food corporation overfills their large fry more. Each company has their own set weight of what a proper large fry should weigh. For Wendy’s it is 184 grams and McDonald’s it is 170 grams. We are going to test which store overfills their large fry more compared to the claimed amount.

  5. Purpose • We are also going to test which company has larger hamburgers compared to their claimed weights of, McDonald’s at 33 grams and Wendy’s at 37 grams.

  6. The Process • We decided to randomly choose which McDonald’s and Wendy’s we would conduct our project on, within reasonable distance. • We ordered 10 fries from each location, and five burgers to weigh. • For our two sample t-test we tested the difference between the actual weight and the claimed weight to see if McDonalds indeed overflowed their food more then Wendys.

  7. Wendy’s Data • Wendy’s Lansdale Wendy’s Warrington • 216.5 -189 • 191 -201 • 185 -187 • 209.5 -193 • 187.9 -196 • 191 -188 • 187 -200 • 193 -187 • 204 -191 • 201 -193

  8. Wendy’s Data • Wendy’s Doylestown • 189 • 201 • 187 • 193 • 196 • 192 • 197 • 196 • 188 • 194

  9. Wendy’s 1-Var Stats • =194.13 • Sx = 7.2426 • Five Number Summary • Min = 185 • =188 • Median = 193 • =197 • Max = 216.5 180 185 190 195 200 205 210 215 220

  10. One Sample T-Test • 1.SRS 1.assumed • 2.normal population or 2.30 30 n 30

  11. One Sample T-Test Wendy’s • Ho: • Ha: • Test Statistic: • = 7.661 • P(t > 7.661) = 9.519

  12. Conclusion • We reject the Ho because the p-value is less than alpha level of .05. We have sufficient evidence that the mean weight of the Wendy’s large fry is greater then 184 grams. • This shows that, indeed the Wendy’s large are generally overflowed.

  13. Wendy’s Confidence Interval ( 191.29, 196.97 ) We are 96% confident the mean weight of the Wendy’s large fry is between 191.29 grams and 196.97 grams.

  14. McDonald’s Data • McDonalds Chalfont McDonald’s Warrington • 171 -187 • 173.2 -216 • 170.6 -186 • 187 -200 • 179 -204.5 • 183 -201.6 • 191 -200 • 176 -198 • 184 -184 • 179 - 192

  15. McDonald’sData • McDonalds Doylestown • 175.2 • 181 • 172 • 192 • 179 • 180 • 179.6 • 193 • 191 • 176

  16. McDonalds One-Var Stats =185.523 Sx= 10.9204 • 5- Number Summary • Min=170.6 • =176 • -Median=184 • = 192 • Max= 210 170 175 180 185 190 195 200 205 210

  17. McDonalds One Sample T Test • 1.SRS 1.assumed • 2.normal population or 2.30 30 n 30

  18. McDonalds T-Test • Ho: M= 170 • Ha: M > 170 • Test Statistic: = 7.786 P( t > 7.786)= 6.91

  19. Conclusion • We reject the Ho because the p-value is less than alpha level of .05. We have sufficient evidence the mean weight of a McDonald’s large fry is greater than 170 grams. In this test we, as well, proved that the McDonald’s large fries are overflowed.

  20. McDonald’s Confidence Interval ( 181.24, 189.81 ) We are 96% confident the mean weight of the McDonalds large fry is between 181.24 grams and 189.81 grams.

  21. Two Sample T-Test • Assumptions 1. Two independent SRS 2. Two Normal Populations or N1 and N2 30 Check • Performed • 30 30 and 30 30

  22. Two Sample T-Test • Test Statistic: =2.2543 P( t > 2.2543)= .0142

  23. Conclusion • We reject the Ho because the p-value is less than alpha level of .05. We have sufficient evidence that the mean overflow of McDonalds large fries is greater than the mean overflow of Wendy’s large fries.

  24. Burger Test Assumptions • Assumptions 1. Two independent SRS 2. Two Normal Populations or N1 and N2 30 Check • Performed • Performed test without meeting assumption

  25. Two Sample Burger T-Test > > = -11.3526 P (t > -11.3526) = 9.74 x 10^-12

  26. Conclusion • We reject the Ho because the p-value is less than alpha level of .05. We have sufficient evidence that the mean extra weight of McDonald’s hamburger is greater than the mean extra weight of Wendy’s hamburger.

  27. Bias/Error • Errors in measuring with the scale • Different workers serving the fries • Different amounts of salt

  28. Personal Conclusion • In completing this project we learned new facts about the fast food industry. We proved that even though the company says their large fries are a certain size, this may not be true. We proved that at both Wendy's and McDonalds the average weight of their large fries were both more then the claimed weight. As well as discovering that McDonald’s burgers are larger compared to their claimed weight then the burgers at Wendy's.
