  4. Common Core Update • Rigorous, research-based standards for English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12 • Designed to prepare the nation’s students with the knowledge and skills needed for success in college and the work force • Internationally benchmarked to ensure that students will be globally competitive

  5. Common Core Update • In 2009, the Council of Chief Sate School Officers (CCSSO) and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) committed to developing a set of standards that would help prepare students for success in college and career • In September 2009, College and Career Readiness standards were released • This work became the foundation for the Common Core

  6. Common Core Update • A voluntary state-led initiative coordinated by Council of Chief State School Officers and National Governors’ Association • Includes parents, educators, content experts, researchers, national organizations and community groups from 46 states, 2 territories and the District of Columbia • Alaska, Minnesota, Texas and Virginia not currently participating

  7. Common Core Update • California Senate Bill 1 (SB x5) • Established an Academic Content Standards Commission (ACSC) to develop mathematics and English-language arts standards • 85% of the standards had to be CCSS • 15% additional standards from the State

  8. Common Core Update • The Common Core Standards are expected to align with the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) framework • Grade 4 Literary text (50%); Informational text (50%) • Grade 8 Literary text (45%); Informational text (55%)

  9. Common Core Update • Major study using three alignment indices comparing Common Common to California Standards: • Categorical Concurrence: the extent of overlap or match between the comparison standards and the Common Core standards. • Depth of Knowledge Consistency: a comparison of cognitive demand of matched content between the sets of comparison standards and the Common Core standards. • Breadth of Coverage: how broadly matched comparison standards cover content elements of the Common Core standards.
