  1. Operating A Crane Can Be A Worthwhile Career

  2. It is surprising just how many people work as crane operators in the UK. As we go about our day, we probably don’t pay much attention to cranes because, although they are very visible, most of what happens takes place 100’, 200’, or even higher in the sky above us. We don’t spend time looking up to see what is going on. Apart from anything else, the crane operator sitting in his cab can hardly be seen. And yet, there are a lot more crane operators out there than you might think. Working as a crane operator can be a worthwhile career, and it also involves a lot of moving about from one site to another. Just one company in Wales has over 8,000 crane operators on its’ books for whom it finds contracts. Some will be able to operate a heavy lift crawler crane with luffing jib attachments, while others operate tower cranes. Limited Time On Site As you can imagine, a crane is only required for a certain period of time on a construction contract, and when that work is completed, the crane is no longer needed. Hence the fact that operators have to move around to wherever the work is.

  3. Operating a crane can take long hours. First the operator has to climb up to the cab which can take anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes and may then spend as long as 12 hours in the cab without coming down. Most don’t have a rest room or toilet, and so they have to take a bottle with them for nature’s requirements. They also need to take refreshments and something to eat, such as sandwiches. In order to become a fully qualified crane operator it takes time. There are so many different parts that can be involved in crane usage, depending upon the type of crane and its’ purposes. So, for instance, it might need a C Rail and accessories for the support and movement of flatform cables for hoist and overhead crane applications. A C Rail and accessories can be made of plastic, but they are far better, and will last a lot longer, when the bodies and trolley wheels are made of steel. Not only is a C Rail system used for crane applications but can be used for other functions as well. Strangely enough, there are no formal qualifications to become a crane operator but if it is something that you would like to do, you can take a college course or perhaps an apprenticeship in order to gain the necessary experience.
