The Deanery • Part of the SHA Workforce and Education Directorate • Allocates the MADEL budget to Trusts who employ and train junior doctors and dentists • Quality manages postgraduate medical and dental training programmes including national co-ordination of selection on behalf of our regulators • Work with a range of stakeholders including NHS Trusts, General Medical Council, General Dental Council, Royal Colleges, Medical Schools etc

Dental Training Programmes • The South Yorkshire East Midlands Deanery continues to be responsible for dental training delivery in South Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire, Nottingham and Leicester • The North, West and East Yorkshire Dental Office, based in Leeds are responsible for dental training delivery across the NEYNL and West Yorkshire Locality Offices

The Regulator! • The General Medical Council has a framework which includes key standards: These standards have been included within 3 documents • Standards for curricula and assessment systems • Generic Standards for Specialty including GP Training • Standards for deaneries • Standard 8 of the Generic Standards document, ‘Educational Resources and Capacity’ makes a mandatory requirement that • ‘all Trusts ensure trainees have access to educational facilities (including a library) and that resources (including access to the internet in all workplaces) are of a standard to enable trainees to achieve the outcomes of the specialty programme as specified in the approved curriculum’ Source: Generic standards for specialty including GP training, revised April 2010

  8. Training Structure • A review of the postgraduate medical training was undertaken (Modernising Medical Careers: MMC) • In 2007 a change to the selection methodology for medical specialties was introduced • August 2010 signals the start of Dental Foundation Training

  9. Before MMC • Certificate for completion of specialty training (CCST) Under-graduate medical training Pre -Registration House Officer (PRHO) 12 months Senior House Officer (SHO) 3 -5 years Specialist Registrars (SpRs) 3 – 5 years

New Initiative …. • A new multi-professional education centre at Pinderfields will open in 2011 • Ground floor positioned library • State of the art facilities • 180 seat tiered lecture theatre • Sufficient numbers of PCs to reflect the continuing move towards electronic information sources • 24 hours access to the library facilities
