  1. Save the Birds! 5th Grade

  2. You will be divided up into different groups • 1) Read your group’s assigned article individually and highlight any part that discusses the cause of bird death • 2) When you have finished reading, discuss the article with your group and come up with a list of ways that birds can die from the article that you read • 3) Talk with your group and come up with a list of ways that humans could help save birds in their environment

  4. Did You Know? • More than 270 million birds are killed in Canada every year from human related activity—including death by cats owned by humans • Colliding with tall man-made structures • Road deaths

  5. Other ways Birds are killed by Human Activity • Oil • Wind Turbines

  6. How does Oil specifically kill birds? • It coats their feathers with greasy, sticky grime • It misaligns the barbs in their feathers that keep their feathers properly aligned • Cause birds to lose critical body heat --Can drown because their messed up feathers make them unable to stay in the air—can drown --As they try to preen—remove oil from their feathers, they eat toxic sludge that poisons them --oil covering eggs can suffocate the unhatchedchicks

Worst Oil Spills • Gulf of Mexico oil spill is the largest accidental spill in world history –April 22, 2010 • Began when an oil well a mile below the surface of the Gulf blew out, causing an explosion that killed 11 people • 2.5 million gallons a day flowed out until they capped the well on July 15, 2010 • Oil gushed from the broken well for more than 85 days • Oiled 572 miles of Gulf shoreline • Killed hundreds of birds and marine life

  11. Worst Oil Spills • Torrey Canyon Oil Spill – March 18, 1967 • Torrey Canyon = a huge ship that could carry 120,000 tons • Hit a coral reef off of the coast of Cornwall • Contaminated 180 miles of coastland • Killed more than 15,000 sea birds

  12. What Can We Do to Help?

We can help by: • Volunteering with cleanup efforts by learning how to clean birds and affected habitats • Donate to organizations that use money to clean up habitats • Dispose of oils in a proper way • Make sure that we keep watercrafts in peak condition • Report any oiled birds to local authorities immediately • Use fewer oil resources • Do not feed birds • Do not let cats wander without a close eye on them • Reduce or contain the use of fireworks
