  1. Energy and Life Why is ATP useful to cells? What happens during the process of photosynthesis?

  2. Cells need energy for… • Growing and developing • Moving materials around • Building new molecules • Responding to environmental changes

  3. Chemical Energy and ATP • Things need energy to move or go… • Why do these things need energy? • Car • Athlete • Computer • Appliances

  4. Chemical Energy and ATP • Even when you sleep your cells need energy, why and for what? • How are these things forms of energy? How do you know? • Light • Heat • Electricity

  5. Adenosine Triphosphate • How many Phosphates? • Cells use this to store and release energy

  6. Adenosine Diphosphate • How many Phosphates? • Like a rechargeable battery • Cells can use it to store energy, and when they need energy can add a phosphate to the compound

  7. Releasing Energy • Adding and subtracting of phosphate groups makes it an efficient way of storing and releasing energy when needed • ATP is a great useful source of energy for the cell because of it’s ability to gain and loose phosphates

  8. Using Biochemical Energy • Cells need ATP to carry out active transport…why? • Sodium Potassium Pump • Youtube • Also provides energy for movement (cilia and flagella) • Most cells only have a little ATP, enough to last just a few seconds of activity • Not a great molecule for storing energy over long periods of time • Glucose is much better, cane store over 90 times energy required to add Phosphate group to ADP

  9. Heterotrophs and autotrophs • Cells must somehow produce energy, they aren’t just born with it • Remember what a Heterotroph is? • How does it get it’s energy? • Remember what an Autotroph is? • How does it get it’s energy?
