  3. Your Professional Status Your first 2 years of professional life a a provisionally registered teacher are an extension of your initial teacher education. (Towards Full Registration,MoE, NZTC 2006)

  4. Your Professional Status To teach in NZ schools you must have a practising certificate. The PRT needs to apply to the NZ Teachers Council for provisional registration. www.teacherscouncil.govt.nz Complete a TC1 application form.

  5. Once a school has appointed you they are legally required to send you a letter offering you the position and outlining the terms and conditions of the employment

  6. Supporting PRTs When a school appoints you, as a year 1or 2 teacher to a permanent or fixed position, it accepts the responsibility of providing you with an advice and guidance programme that will support your progress towards becoming an effective, fully registered classroom teacher.

  8. Advice and Guidance Induction A planned advice and guidance programme 0.2 teaching load- a year 1 teacher should be timetabled for: • no more that 15 hours of teaching, • 5 hours of non contact • 5 hours of advice and guidance

Advice Look after yourself, physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually Be pro-active - set up support systems use support systems use holidays effectively take time out balance your lifePlan ahead How are you going to develop relationships with your students How are you going to learn their names? Do you have a strategy for managing unexpected behaviour?

  13. Hot Tips • Apply for your provisional registration at the completion of your degree. This can take up to 6 weeks. • At your job interview, ask about the support the school will provide for you as a PRT • Visit your school and make contact with your principal and co-ordinator and HOD. • Become familiar with relevant school documentation eg. School website , staff handbook, policies and procedures. • Find out about the school’s induction programme • Consider what you might need to plan and prepare for your first week
