Definition - the painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma - AKA: mercy killing, assisted suicide - originated from the greek word for ”good death”
Two main classifications of Euthanasia 1.) Voluntary- conducted with consent 2.) Involuntary- conducted without consent. - the decision is made by another person because the patient is incapable to doing so himself/herself
2 procedural classifications: Passive- life-sustaining treatments are withheld. - no intention to take the life Active- lethal substances or forces are used to end the patient’s life - life-ending actions are conducted by the patient or somebody else.
Assisted Suicide 1. Physician-Assisted Suicide - Suicide accomplished with the aid of a medical doctor intentionally providing a person with an overdose of prescription medication. 2. Assisted Suicide - Suicide accomplished with the aid of another person.
