GALILEO can help... • GALILEO Helps Libraries • Fill in collection gaps with books, magazines, and more • Reduce duplicate subscriptions • Take advantage of reference resources, including current encyclopedias, medical reference books, and literary criticism • Extend the library hours through 24 X 7 online access

Make the most of what you have! • 27% of public library websites in Georgia feature a reader’s advisory page.  Half of these feature GALILEO or links to Novelist or Novelist K-8, the great reader’s advisory tools provided via GALILEO. • 56% of public library websites have a genealogy page, but only 31% feature GALILEO or links to Ancestry and Heritage Quest, the essential genealogy resources provided via GALILEO. • 48% of the University System of Georgia libraries have a link to a journals A-Z listing, but only 10% of those link to the service in GALILEO.

  8. GALILEO Local Resource Integration A.K.A--GLRI • Through GLRI you can: • Add and manage local resources (databases, catalogs, websites, etc…) within GALILEO. For K-12 Public Schools, resource must be purchased at the system level. • Get and utilize GALILEO Express Links for local resources

Link Directly to Databases use GALILEO Express Links • What is a GALILEO Express Link? • Persistent URL to GALILEO or GLRI resource • Add to online and print resources • Authentication handled by GALILEO • Authorization controlled by GALILEO or You (if GLRI) • Where can I locate an Express Link? • Right click on any database name in list. • Databases A-Z> Express Links (in left navigation bar) • More information--FAQ

Link Directly to Pages in GALILEO • All GALILEO URLS are durable • URLs can be captured and placed within print/online resources • URLs are institution-specific. • Home users must authenticate if they select a link or service (search) that requires log in. • Example: • http://www.galileo.usg.edu/high-school/k12-demo/subjects/diseases/articles-databases/ User View Institution Main Tab Subject Category Subject Category Tab

Link Directly to Pages in GALILEO • You may want to think about linking to: • Journals/Magazines A-Z page • Example: Jefferson County Library Magazines A-Z • “Search” page • Example: Cobb County Schools High School Search • Databases A-Z page • Example: Gordon College Databases A-Z • Specific Subject Category • Example: Consumer Health Databases AFPL • Specific “Type” like dictionaries or encyclopedias • Example: Teen Encyclopedias Worth County Schools

  14. Create a Persistent Link to a Journal 1. Click on Journals/Magazines A-Z 2. Browse for Or Search for journal/magazine

  17. Create a Persistent Link to a Journal 5. Copy and Paste URL into print or online resources. Note: URL may be too long for some resources. Shorten URL by going to: http://tiny.cc

  18. Create a Persistent Link to an Article 1. Search for full-text article in GALILEO database (EBSCO or ProQuest will work best). 2. Copy down citation information: Journal/Magazine Title, Title, Author, Volume, Issue, Date, Page Number, ISSN (if available)

Pertinent Information About GALILEO to Post • What is GALILEO—What does GALILEO provide access to? • Specific information for parents • Specific information for teachers • Get GALILEO Password! • Provide information on how to get the current GALILEO password • If you offer a way for user’s to login with a library card or student id, provide a way to access the current GALILEO password from a secure page. • Login to GALILEO via PINES • For PINES libraries, provide information on how to login to GALILEO after logging into PINES with PINES id/pw. • Login to GALILEO via GeoLocation • Provide link to information on logging in via GeoLocation.

Finally—Trusted-Source Authentication • Does your library/institution provide a way for users to log in to view information or pages on your website? • If So, you might be a good candidate for using GALILEO trusted-source authentication. • GALILEO trusted-source authentication allows you to: • Embed special GALILEO Express Links that contain authentication information. • These special GALILEO Express Links will log your users into GALILEO automatically—no password required. • These links have to live behind secure webpages that require a user to log in to view. • Contact Us for further information.

What Can You Do with All of This! • Create Subject Landing Pages • Create online handouts and flyers that contain links • Promote specific GALILEO resources on library, media center, and institution webpages • Create lists of journals for faculty members • Link to databases, journals, and articles within online courses • Utilize journal, article, and database links within LibGuides or other library guides • Promote your local library resources alongside GALILEO resources • Reach specific segments of your audience • Make GALILEO easier for your users!
