  2. What is a native species? • Native Species: A species whose presence in a given region or ecosystem is the result of only natural processes, with no human intervention.

  3. What is a non-native species? • Non-native species: a species living outside its native distributional range, which has arrived there by human activity, either deliberate or accidental. What is an invasive species? • Invasive species: A non-native species whose introduction causes or is likely to cause economic or environmental harm or harm to human health. • About 50,000 non-native species live in the US and about 7,100 of them are invasive.

Problems with Invasive Species • After habitat loss and degradation, the introduction of invasive species is the biggest cause of animal and plant extinctions. • The estimated damage from invasive species worldwide totals more than $1.4 trillion. • The estimated cause for the U.S. is $137 billion each year.
