  2. Quilting • Quilting is like putting puzzles together. • Fabric strips are sewn together to make a fabric picture

  3. History of Quilts • Colonists were not allowed to manufacture fabric – they were required to import fabric from Britain • Imported fabric was expensive, so every scrap of fabric was used • The US flag is rumored to be a “quilt” made by Betsy Ross, who owned an upholstery shop

  4. History of Quilts • Early settlers used quilts to decorate their homes, to keep warm and to tell stories • Political themes and family history were the stories told by the quilt’s images

  5. Getting Started • Choosing your fabrics • Choose a color scheme • Combine fabrics with large and small print scales • Place fabrics to get contrast between prints and colors

  6. Cutting Fabric • In order for the pieces to fit precisely, every piece must be cut accurately • Trace pattern piece onto fabric • Use a rotary cutter, mat and ruler for accuracy

  7. Rotary Cutter • Saves time – can cut through several layers of fabric at once • Place fabric on the mat • Disengage the safety mechanism • Place a ruler or cutting edge along the marked line • Roll the blade along the cutting edge keeping your fingers clear

  8. Making the 9 Square Quilt • Carefully pin each row together • For a precise fit, sew all seam allowances ¼ inch. • Begin stitching slowly, removing the pins as you sew. • Finish your pillow following directions
