  2. Politicians & Public Figures William Phips • Nominated to be first Royal Governor of Massachusetts • Created Court of Oyer and Terminer • Placed prominent and experienced men of Boston and Salem • Put William Stoughton in charge

  3. Politicians & Public Figures William Phips • Even own wife, Lady Mary Phips was named • On October 1692, ordered spectral evidence and testimony insufficient • 3 weeks later, prohibited further arrests • Released 49 of 52 in jail

Thomas Putnam • Putnam filed complaints for afflicted girls • Emphasized that the Devil was attempting to spread evil in Salem • Told judges they would receive praise and reward when Jesus was resurrected • Accused Reverend George Burroughs of being ringleader of witches The Putnam House

Died in Prison Sarah Osborne • Married Robert Prince who owned 150-acre farm next to John Putnam, but died prematurely • Hired Alexander Osborne as a servant • Married him shortly afterwards • Attempted to take over her children’s inheritance money from deceased spouse • Accused of witchcraft in 1692 along with Tituba and Sarah Good

  9. Died in Prison (cont.) • Never confessed and did not accuse anyone • She claimed that “the devil could take the shape of another person without their compliance” • Osborne died shackled in prison at age 49; died before tried

  10. Pressed to Death • 80 year old man • Refused to stand for the trial • Given the sentence of peine forte et dure • Only person in American history to be pressed to death by order of the court Giles Corey

  11. Pressed to Death (cont.) • No forfeiture of estate by conviction under English and Massachusetts law • No one else was proven innocent • Thought the jury already found him guilty Corey being crushed by stones
