  2. Collective Behaviour Voluntary, often spontaneous behaviour, that is engaged in by a large number of people and typically violates dominant group norms and values.

  3. Conditions for Collective Behaviour There are three major factors that contribute to the likelyhood that collective behavior will occur: • Structural factors that increase the chances of responding in a particular way • Timing • A breakdown in social-control methods…a feeling of normlessness

  4. London Riots • Occurred on March 30, 1990. • The mob was protesting against a series of taxes. • They gathered at 11 AM, and looting had began to take place by 3 PM. • London Riots

  5. Why do people feel the need to go outside of traditional institutional patterns and organizations • Some activists feel like they cannot get their point across unless they do. • Accordingly, they hold protests, strikes, or establish blockades.

  6. Why do people act collectively rather than independently? • People believe there are strength in numbers. • People may act as a collectivity when they believe it is the only way to fight those with greater power and resources.
