8. About the Author • David James (Dave) Pelzer (born December 29, 1960 in San Francisco, California) • Pelzer was born in San Francisco, California, and was the second of five boys. • His teachers stepped in on March 5, 1973, wherein 12-year-old Pelzer was placed in foster care.

Author Cont. • At age 18 he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1979 and served in the Gulf War. • Pelzer married in the 1980's to his first wife, a woman named Patsy with whom he had a son. • Pelzer divorced Patsy and many years later he married his second wife, a woman named Marsha who was his editor.

27. Plot Will is an orphan in Castle Redmont. At age 15, the orphans are expected to either become an apprentice of one of the masters at Redmont Fief or go off to work in the fields. After much stressing and suspicion of his own behalf, Will is chosen to become a Ranger. Rangers are the intelligence force and unofficial "spies" of Araluen. They have mastered the art of unseen and unheard movement, camouflage, knife throwing, knife fighting skills and archery. After being an apprentice for a few days, Will's teacher, a legendary Ranger named Halt, takes Will to see his horse Tug. With Tug, Will trains in the skills needed to pass his assessment at the annual Ranger meeting.

Bio • Name at birth: John Anthony FlanaganBorn: 22 May 1944 • Birthplace: Sydney, Australia • Best known as: Author of the Ranger's Apprentice series of Young Adult Books. • A former advertising and television writer, John Flanagan is now known for writing the Ranger's Apprentice fantasy books for young readers. Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia, took to writing early, and eventually caught on as an ad agency writer. Later he moved to television and with co-writer Gary Reilly created the sitcom Hey Dad..! The show was a long-running hit on Australian TV, airing over 200 episodes from 1987-94.

His 2004 medieval fantasy The Ruins of Gorlan introduced the character of Will, a 15-year-old orphan who trains to be a woodcrafty ranger and finds himself fighting to save his kingdom.
