  1. Civil War and Reconstruction – Part 3Unit 8 by Mrs. Villanueva

  2. War and Slavery Come to an End In 1863, before the Civil War was won, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The Emancipation Proclamation stated that all slaves in the Confederate states would be free.

  3. War and Slavery Come to an End With their new freedom, many slaves were faced with new problems… Where would they live? How would they make money to survive?? Their way of life was changing and it was a difficult adjustment for some. Many Texans who had owned slaves were not happy about the new law.

  4. War and Slavery Come to an End The time after the Civil War was known as Reconstruction. This was a time when the north and south would have to join together again to find a new way of life.

  5. War and Slavery Come to an End African Americans had to find jobs and places to live. Farmers had to find a new way to grow their crops without the help of slave labor. This caused many problems between some Anglo Americans and the freed African Americans.

  6. War and Slavery Come to an End In 1865, The United States established the Freedmen’s Bureau, which helped freed slaves find homes and work and opened new schools for the African American children. Some African Americans became sharecroppers. This is when they farm on someone else’s land and give some of the profit to the landowner. Sharecroppers were given a place to live on the farm, as well.

  7. War and Slavery Come to an End Although some still opposed it, Texas finally rejoined the United States in March of 1870. Some citizens were not in support of the Governor’s decision because they believed he was giving too much help to the African Americans. Texas wrote a new state constitution which took power away from the governor and other state officials.
