Introduction Databases are used for following 2 broad functions: • Operational • To support day to day data needs of business processes, for example – Orders data, Invoices data, Payments data etc • Used by front line employees, like Store Keepers, Sales Executives etc • Main purpose is Record Keeping • Actions performed by users are Adding, Removing or Changing records • Called as Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) databases • Example - ERP Database • Informational • To support Decision Making • Typically Used by Managers, Analysts etc • Main Purpose is Information Retrieval and Analysis • Action performed by users is mainly Querying records • Called as Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) databases • Example – Reporting Database

  5. Business Intelligence - Definitions Data Warehouse • Data Warehouse is an Integrated Store of High quality structured data for analysis and decision making. It provides a consistent, Single version of truth to Users. It is created by extracting the data from corporate, operational and external databases Data Mart • Data Mart is a Function Oriented Data Warehouse, for example Sales Data Mart, typically created out of an Enterprise Data Warehouse OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) • Set of tools which allow users to view the enterprise data along multiple dimensions, provides following features: • Reporting Applications • Adhoc Query (Self Service Reporting) • Statistical Analysis • Chart / Graphs • Drill Down / Roll up
