1. ONSITE WORKSHOPS AND TRAININGS 2009 For over 100 years Neighborhood House has been helping people, families and organizations develop the skills, knowledge and confidence to thrive in diverse communities. The Integration Framework In this workshop Neighborhood House shares a research based model for immigrant integration – the lens through which it sees its work. Learn how this model reflects the interconnectedness and complexity of peoples’ lives while helping practitioners maintain a holistic view of their clients. Time Commitment: 2 hours Promoting and Honoring Diversity in the Workplace In this workshop you will explore the difference between managing and sustaining diversity as a shared organizational value. Understand how the mindset of your employees and their actions can promote an inclusive environment in your workplace and learn about actions you can take to create a more welcoming environment for all. Time Commitment: 1 hour Building Common Ground This workshop allows participants to reflect on their own ancestry in an effort to build their understanding and help them overcome the challenges of reaching out to new immigrants and refugees. Time Commitment: 1 hour Race the Power of an Illusion (Part 1) – The Difference Between Us The Difference Between Us examines how recent scientific discoveries have toppled the concept of biological race. The training helps us understand why it doesn’t make scientific or genetic sense to sort people into biological races, as it dismantles our most basic myths about race, including natural superiority and inferiority. A facilitated dialog will have participants reflect on the difference between a biological and a social view of race. Time Commitment: 2 hours Race the Power of an Illusion (Part II) – The Story We Tell The Story We Tell uncovers the roots of the race concept, including the 19th-century “science” that legitimated it and the hold it has gained over our minds. The training traces the transformation of tentative suspicions about difference into a "common-sense" wisdom that people used to explain everything from individual behavior to the fate of whole societies, an idea of race that persists to this day. A facilitated dialog will have participants reflect on the ways that race has been used to rationalize inequality. Time Commitment: 2 hours Race the Power of an Illusion (Part III) – The House We Live In The House We Live In focuses not on individual behaviors and attitudes, but on how our institutions shape and create race, giving different groups vastly unequal life chances. The training reveals some of the ordinary social institutions that quietly channel wealth and opportunity, so that some people benefit from a racist system without personally being racist. A facilitated dialog will have participants reflect on policies and institutions that have helped create segregation and wealth disparities. Time Commitment: 2 hours Introduction to Hmong Culture and Family Systems In this workshop you will learn about Hmong history, culture, family systems, beliefs and practices. Participants will leave this training feeling more prepared to confidently engage their Hmong clients, colleagues and neighbors. Time Commitment: 1 hour Our East African Students In this workshop you will learn the fundamentals for effectively working with your Somali students and families. Participants will gain knowledge about the educational system in Somalia and how it differs from the US, while increasing their understanding of the cultural, social and spiritual values of Somali students and the differences that might exist among them. Time Commitment: 1 hour Introduction to Somali Culture and Family Systems In this workshop you will learn about Somali history, culture, family systems, beliefs and practices. Participants will leave this training feeling more prepared to confidently engage their Somali clients, colleagues and neighbors. Time Commitment: 1 hour WHAT • We are proud to announce our 2009 onsite workshops and trainings. These trainings are designed to help you: • build bridges between new immigrants and long-term Minnesotans • increase your capacity to effectively engage immigrant and refugee populations • further understand different customs and cultures WHY Over the last few decades, Minnesota’s demographics have been changing. Immigrants and refugees have been coming from all over the world and have settled throughout our state. Learning more about these new members of our community will better prepare you for the future. ONSITE WORKSHOPS AND TRAININGS 2009 Community Building in and with Multilingual and Multicultural Communities In this workshop you will gain an understanding of how traditional community engagement can be restructured so that it is more inclusive. Participants will learn how large structures that act as supports for long-term residents can pose barriers to the successful integration of newcomers and what can be done to remove these barriers. Time Commitment: 2 hours A New Framework for Working with Immigrants This workshop is geared toward community leaders who will learn a framework for immigrant integration, analyze their community’s readiness to develop and apply policies that facilitate integration, learn promising practices for immigrant integration while developing the foundation for an immigrant integration action plan. Time Commitment: 4 hours An Introduction to Understanding Immigrant Issues This workshop will help members of your community become more aware of the changing demographics in Minnesota and in the US. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the facts and myths about immigration while recognizing the opportunities and needs resulting from having new immigrants in their community. Time Commitment: 1 hour Latinos in Minnesota In this workshop participants will enhance their knowledge about Latinos in Minnesota, their demographic profile, future trends, and the challenges and opportunities Latinos create for our communities. Time Commitment: 1 hour Are Chicanos, Hispanics and Latinos All Alike? In this workshop you will learn the differences between the words “Chicano”, “Hispanic”, and “Latino” – and how they are rooted in history. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the cultural, economic, geographic, racial, linguistic, and educational differences between Latinos as well as some similarities. Time Commitment: 1 hour Latino Students and Families: A Cultural Competency Workshop In the first part of this workshop participants will build their knowledge about Latin America and Latinos in the US and Minnesota. The second half of the workshop focuses on understanding Latinos and the challenges they face while providing best-practices for working with Latino students and families. Time Commitment: 2 hours Culture Clashes In this workshop you will learn about different cultural perspectives – individualism vs. collectivism – or – high context vs. low context relationships. By understanding these different cultural perspectives participants will be able to identify where culture clashes arise and how they can better work across cultures and develop stronger cross-cultural relationships. Time Commitment: 1 hour Immigrant Barriers to Mental Health Services In this workshop Neighborhood House will share some of the research it has conducted within immigrant groups about why they are not accessing mental health services more regularly. A number of small group activities will help participants better understand how they can either perpetuate or work to eliminate these barriers for immigrants. Time Commitment: 2 hours Multicultural Perspectives on Health and Wellbeing In this workshop you will learn about the different concepts of nutrition, diets and staples, food as rituals and celebrations within immigrant populations living in MN. Participants will also better understand the lifestyle changes immigrants face when moving from their homeland to the US. Time Commitment: 1 hour Multicultural Caregiving In this workshop practitioners will further develop their cultural competency by understanding how caregiving is not a universal concept, how multicultural family systems differ, and by identifying what cultural barriers may exist in a caregiving setting.
