  9. Current Events Recent Oil Drilling Cuba has begun a drilling program to secure what they believe is 5 billion barrels of oil off of its coast. Effects/Importance: Cuba is a very independent country, and where they originally relied on Venezuelan oil, by claiming this oil for itself, it can lessen its dependence on foreign resources and become even more independent. Foreign Energy Dependence Cuban Oil Rig Property Reforms For the first time in years, Cuba has allowed its citizens to buy and sell property. Previous attempts at this has met with less than satisfactory results. Effects/Importance: When first allowed, housing prices sky rocketed and the complicated property laws allowed for a collapse in the housing market. With more recent reforms, it’s interesting to see how Cuban laws may be forced to become more liberal to simply allow success. Intense Liberal Law Reforms U.S. Embargo on Cuba Repealed Last year, the economic and political embargo on Cuba was lifted in an overwhelming United Nations vote. Effects/Importance: With the lifting of the embargo, Cuba has now been granted greater access to the rest of the world, perhaps comfortably for the first time in decades. Global Isolation from UN
