  1. APT Information Session

  2. Interactive Session • Purpose • To recognize the hard work of our exemplary programs • Provide an APT alternative option • To promote learning improvement at the academic program level

  3. Overview • Thank you • Macro • National Issue- Lack of Learning Improvement • Micro • How can JMU help you achieve your program with assessment and beyond? • APT Alternative option

  4. Thank you! • 42 programs who have held exemplary status for at least two years!

  5. Institutional Highlights

  6. Institutional Highlights

  7. Regional Accreditor- SACSCOC • JMU passed with no recommendations • 2/3 of all institutions get flagged by the off-site committee for academic degree program assessment of student learning outcomes

  8. MACRO Goal: Improve Student Learning

  9. NATIONAL scene …most colleges and universities were using multiple measures to determine student learning outcomes. At the same time, relatively few schools were “closing the loop,” or using the information in any material way to intentionally modify policy and practice. Rarer still were colleges or universities where changes in policies or practices made a positive difference in student attainment. (p. 4, Kuh, 2011)

  10. Assessment cycle

  11. Use Of Results? • Common Interpretations • Making change to assessment process • Making change to program (e.g., curricular, pedagogical modification) • Making change to program, re-assessing and finding learning growth TRUE IMPROVEMENT

  12. Simple Model Now, we can say this change is an improvement At this point, only a change.

  13. Small Group Activity • Answer the following questions: • What are the potential benefits to your program if it were to implement the “simple” model? • What are the potential barriers ?

  14. MIcro APT Alternative

  15. APT Alternative • Opportunity to explore or reflect this semester and turn in a one-page summary of your efforts/plans instead of the full APT report • You will still need to: • Collect data • Obtain department head approval by June 1. • If you opt for the alternative, your 2012-2013 scores will be repeated for this year

  16. Opportunity • To explore • If there is a learning area of interest, we encourage you to work with PASS to explore an area more in depth • Could include surveying, focus groups, etc. • To reflect • This can take many forms • Opportunity to collectively decide where your program would like to go in the future with learning and assessment

  17. Brainstorming • With time off from reporting, what would you really like to focus on in your program? • How could the assessment process be more meaningful for the whole program? • Select a partner and brainstorm possibilities

  18. Logistics • Need to let us know by February 15, 2014 which option you would like to take. • Status Quo – I want to submit the APT as usual on June 1 • Explore- I want to work with my faculty and/or PASS to explore an area of learning in-depth. On June 1, I’ll provide a summary of these efforts • Reflect- I want to reflect on our assessment efforts and tell you about our program’s progress and plan for next year on June 1.

  19. Resources • PASS (Program Assessment Support Services) • Campus Resources • Center for Instructional Technology (CIT) • Center for Faculty Innovation (CFI) • Many more! • Follow-Up Events We want you to get the support you need to achieve the goals you are most interested in

  20. Summary Status Quo Turn in APT on June 1 Explore Turn in one page summary of in-depth exploration of specific learning area on June 1 Reflect Turn in one page summary reflection and/or plan for next year on June 1 APT Rated Summer 2014, Feedback on Oct. 1 Prior APT Scores Recorded, next APT due June 1, 2015 Prior APT Scores Recorded, next APT due June 1, 2015 Note: APT reports always due after alternative year.

  21. Questions/comments/IDeas

  22. Possible questions to consider • What do our assessment results really mean to our program? • What has your program learned about assessment? • What changes to your program might you consider?

  23. Evidenced Improvement: Rare at JMU TOO • Only five percent • Not institutionally structured well to facilitate evidence improvement

  24. Well Positioned • WE have many programs who have great methodology, • Consistent over time • Quality designs • If these programs were to sync new interventions with their assessment, they would likely be able to tell this rare story.

  25. Imagine…. • How does that help us? • Students learn more • JMU National Model • Disciplinary Exemplars • Grants?

  26. Syncing Our Current System • First, need to better operationalize learning improvement within APT system • Starts with APT Evaluation Rubric

  27. Rubric • Old Rubric Criterion for Using Results • New Rubric Criterion for Using Results • FYI • NO other rubric criteria will be materially changed. • And, criteria for Exemplary Assessment will stay the same.

  28. Option Status Quo • If your program is not… • Interested, or • Not ready • Submit APT as usual on June 1, 2014

  29. Option Explore • Program faculty have selected an objective to work on…BUT • Do not yet know enough about the issues with that objective to make a plan of intervention. • Possible activities • Focus groups with faculty • Focus groups with students • Exploration/examination of curriculum map

  30. Option Intervene • Program faculty know which objective to target BUT have yet to • Structure or Implement changes. • Possible activities • Explore what other programs and/or institutions are doing • Create intervention plan/timeline

  31. What does a solid intervention look like • Note: • Not expecting this level of detail from anyone now…just making it clear what real quality might look like

  32. Options, Summary NOT Interested or Ready for this Process: Turn in APT per usual Jun 1, 2014 Option Status Quo Interested and Ready Ready to Curricular or Pedagogical modifications OPTION Intervention Need to Target Area to Work on OPTION Explore

  33. Important Dates & Logistics • By February 15th, Indicate to Keston (fulchekh@jmu.edu) what option you would like to take. • June 1, 2014. Either submit full APT as usual (Option Status Quo) OR Submit summary of progress toward other options. In both cases, submit through APT system. • Note, if you take explore or intervene option, APT scores will be frozen from year before. Must maintain exemplary status for every-other-year reporting.

  34. Look out for the following… One –on-one program interviews…. -what would it take to engage your faculty on the idea -what resources would you need to get the job done right Workshops on areas you need
