  3. Merlynston Village Green Project aims • To deliver energy efficiency and water conservation measures • To increase resource conservation literacy across the community • To enhance the community’s capacity to respond to climate change • To test methods for engaging residents at suburb scale.

Household sustainability • Independent advice tailored to the household’s needs, • Free personalised energy efficiency and water conservation kits • Free showerhead exchange program • Sustainable Home Renovations service, • Access to community solar electricity and solar hot water initiatives, • Access to the ZCM Concession Assist program

  10. Home visit numbers • 1,015 homes visited • 666 not home (info materials left) • 349 doors answered • 174 residents engaged in conversations about energy and water conservation (97 of these signed up to ZCM) • 175 residents not interested in conversation

Outcomes • 429 energy and water saving kits distributed • Residents report increased awareness of household energy efficiency • Neighbourhood greenhouse gas emissions reduced by ~ 10,200 kg CO2-e/yr through distribution of energy saving products • Stronger sense of community reported • Attendance rate at events always higher than anticipated • Ongoing community meetings and spring fete – this Sunday is Merlynston Diverse Voices Festival

Lessons learnt • Enabling community input into project from outset increased community trust, support and engagement • Tying community level projects with individual household retrofits helped earn trust • Need to clearly define project parameters from outset • Households grateful for personalised sustainability advice • Free products open conversations and assure that we’re not sales people • Home visits enabled ZCM to reach beyond the ‘usual suspects’ • Door-knocking approach is resource intensive – ZCM sign ups low relative to time & energy invested. • Ensure home visit messaging is clear • Longer project timeline would support stronger community trust
