The Election • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6qnVpC4zXpM (2:54) • Who-John Qunicy Adams, Crawford, Clay ,and Jackson • When- During the election of 1824 • Technically Andrew Jackson won so that meant John Quincy Adams lost but, since he got nearly double the house votes he won the election. People did not want him as a president. Adams was the only Northerner running for office.Adams tried to get his other candidates to be sent off to foreign countries. To get more people to vote for him he began attending every social event he could. Adam had people in New England who held rallies. One meeting at The Faneuil Hall (Feb. 15th 1824) Before Election Adams friends approached Clay's(another candidate) supporters and offered them to split the votes between them and said no to that plan. In the end Adams won the election and Clay's men regretted the offer they rejected. • SPE- This would be Political. The reason for is because this is a presidential election. After his term as the sixth president he went into the house of representatives.

  6. Candidate Electoral Vote Population Vote House Vote Jackson 99 153,544 7 Adams 84 108,740 13 SPE- This would be Political. The reason for is because this is a presidential election. After his term as the sixth president he went into the house of representatives. CONNECTIONS:A connection to the world today is the election of 2004 Bush vs. Kerry was really close. The electoral votes were Bush at 265 and Kerry at 252. This relates to Adams and Jackson because with a few more votes the opposite candidate could have won. Who knows what today would be like if that would of happened.

  7. Tariff of Abominations • What is a tariff? • What does Abomination mean? • What do you already know about this? • In 1828 the US congress, passed the 1st import tax but it was actually a protective tax. It increased the cost of imported good and protected part of the new businesses in the North. In the south the economy was bad and relied on cotton and, they opposed the tariff. As a result the Tariff was known as the Tariff of Abominations today. Which means something bad or hated. The south exported the cotton which there whole livelihood relied on. They made the Tariff to protect the northern manufacturers, because British goods were low in price. The south didn’t like it because it raised their cost of products they had to buy. Also made it harder to sell their cotton to foreign countries, if the British were selling less to us they had less money to buy. The north liked this because it protected their business the south didn’t because of the tax.

  8. Tariff of Abominations SPE and Connections • SPE-This should be all of them. Social because it deals with people and how their life is going to be affected by the amount of money. This goes into Economic because it affected the amount of money products could be sold at. Political because its about our country trading with other nations which is also economic. A bigger reason for it to be political because it caused fights between the North and South, they disagreed on whether or not it should happen. • Connection- A connection to today’s world is gas. Because the world is getting lower and lower on gas, the countries that have the gas are raising the prices to import it here which means it has to be sold very high. Theirs also a debate in the US if we should have Tariffs or if we should have freedom of trade. • Who was against it • Discussion questions • Who liked and why

  9. Chesapeake and Ohio Canal • This was part of the American Plan to strengthen America’s transportation • When they first broke ground on July 4th this was going to be something that would increase the speed that things would get transported across the country. • This was completed by 1850 there wasn’t much use for canals and railroads were taking over

  10. Quiz • Who was his Vice President? • Why was the election so important? • What did the Tariff do? • Who was the runner up for president? • What year was the Tariff of Abominations?
