Goal of this Training • Targeted at SCCAN deployment personnel. • Provide an in-depth of WSM installation: • Overview of WSM System • Overview of WSM installation layers • Description of how WSM installation works for each layer • By completing this training, participants will: • Understand the overall WSM install process. • Understand the different phases of WSM installation. • Be able to perform a WSM installation. • This training should not be used in place of official Motorola installation/configuration documents.

WSM System Overview • The WSM is a single component in the overall SCCAN solution. • WSM installation is a single step in the overall SCCAN solution installation. • This training covers WSM installation only. WSM System Overview • WSM Platform is a Sun SunFire V120 server with the following features: • 650 MHz CPU w/ 512 Kb Cache • 1.5 Gb Memory (supports up to 4 Gb) • 2 x 36 Gb SCSI Hard Drives (hot swappable) • 2 built-in 10/100 Ethernet interfaces • 1 Gigabit Ethernet interface (supports 10/100/1000 Mb Ethernet and 802.1q and 802.1p QoS) • CD-ROM drive • 1 RU form factor • AC Powered (1 power supply) • 1 LOM (Lights Out Management) RJ-45 port and 1 additional RJ-45 serial port • 1 external SCSI port • 2 USB ports • Replaceable System Configuration card that contains system identity information (Host ID, MAC address, and NVRAM variables)

9. Overview of WSM Installation • The WSM system currently is a standard Sun Sunfire V120 server pre-installed with the Solaris 8 operating system. • The installation process consists of the following: • Gather required installation data • Install a customized Solaris 9 operating system • Install third party software packages used by WSM applications • Install WSM software application components • The install steps are conceptually referred to as ‘layers’ of the WSM installation. • Each layer installation must be completed in the specified order as depicted on the previous slide. This implies that the WSM CDs must be installed in the order depicted as well.

10. WSM Installation Documents • The primary document used to perform an installation is the WSM Installation MOP (Method of Procedure). • The MOP describes the required actions and expected results of each step needed to complete the installation. • Always refer to the MOP when performing an installation! • Refer to the WSM Troubleshooting Guide in case errors are encountered during the installation process.

11. Required Installation Data • In order to successfully install the WSM, some information must be collected prior to starting the installation. • This information includes: • Network information (Hostname, IP address, default route, subnet mask) • VLAN configuration information • IP address of external server (DNS server) • The required information may change in the future, so always consult the MOP ‘Fresh Install Preparation’ steps to determine what information is needed for installation.

12. Operating System Layer • This layer consists of the Solaris 9 operating system. • After this layer is installed, the WSM: • Will be configured with all network parameters. • Hard disks will be partitioned as needed for the WSM applications. • Disk partitions will be mirrored across the two WSM hard drives. • Basic operating system utilities, libraries and executables will be available.

13. OS Layer Installation • The WSM by default has a Solaris 8 OS installed when it ships from the factory. This OS must be removed. • The first 2 CDs of the WSM installation media contain the OS software. • The first CD is a ‘bootable’ CD that contains a basic environment that performs the installation. • The Sun Solaris ‘Jumpstart’ installation procedure is used to install the WSM OS: • The Jumpstart installation allows the first CD to contain a set of scripts that will be executed prior to installing the OS and a set of scripts that will be executed immediately after the OS is installed. • The actual OS installation involves creating the necessary filesystems, configuring basic system parameters and extracting base OS packages to disk.

15. 3rd Party Software Layer • The third party software layer is the first part of the WSM Installation Software CD 3 installation. • This layer consists of software packages that are not supplied by the OS but are required for the WSM applications to operate correctly.

16. Summary • The WSM installation is a single step in the overall SCCAN solution installation. • The WSM installation process consists of 4 distinct layers: • OS layer • Third party software layer • WSM application layer • The installation is performed via 3 WSM installation CDs. • Two OS installation CDs • One WSM application CD • Installation instructions are supplied in form of a MOP. • The installation process is largely automated except for entering system/network configuration data.
