  1. The Respiratory System EQ: What are the organs of the respiratory system and their functions?

  2. Respiratory System: ISN 43 • Function: to exchange gasesbetween the blood and the environment. • When someone breathes air in and out: • The blood in the lungs absorbs oxygen for cellular respiration. • The lungs allow the CO2 (a waste gas of cellular respiration) to leave the body. Click: Respiratory Interactive

  3. Sketch of Respiratory System ISN 42 Draw and label

  4. B. Organs of Respiratory System : ISN 45 • Nose - collects air from the environment and moistens and heats the air before it enters the trachea. • Trachea– (Windpipe) a tube held open by rings of cartilage; moves air from the nose to the lungs • Bronchi (Bronchus) A pair of tubes that move air between the trachea and lungs. A bronchus extends into each lung. Click for video: Bronchitus

  5. Sketch of Trachea & Bronchi ISN 44 Draw and Label a Diagram of just the Trachea and Bronchi

  6. Organs of Respiratory: ISN 47 • Lungs – The 2 organs where the blood and air meet so oxygen and CO2 can be exchanged. Click: Pneumonia Animation • Alveoli – pronunciation tiny sacs in the lungs where the gas exchange occurs. Look like clusters of grapes.

  7. Sketch of Bronchi, Lungs, and Aveoli. ISN 46

  8. aveoli gas exchange clip 1:30 • Diaphragm - a dome-shaped muscle that aides in the breathing process. diaphragm clip 55sec

  9. C. Diseases and Disorders of the Respiratory System: VIRAL Infections: • Common cold - an infectious illness caused by a virus in the respiratory system. A cold virus can only reproduce inside living cells. It multiplies and attacks the mucous membranes of the nose and throat causing runny nose, sore throat, fever. Antibiotics wont help because it’s a virus • Influenza (flu): a highly contagious viral infection. Causes fever, muscle aches, and a severe cough. More severe and longer lasting than colds. Click: Vaccines

  10. BACTERIAL Infections: Strep Throat - a contagious disease caused by a bacterial infection. Symptoms: fever, pain, redness, & swelling of the throat & tonsils. Can be mild or severe.

  11. D. Asthma: a non-infectious disorder in which bronchial tubes contract quickly, causing shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. Click: Asthma Animation
